Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine has revealed that Jean Alexander’s family contacted her to congratulate her when her daughter Hilda was born.

Fans were convinced that her kids, Albert and Hilda, were named after Albert Tatlock (Jack Howarth) and Hilda Ogden (Jean).

Speaking on Lorraine, the star said: ‘Coronation Street is very special to me. They are both family names, so that was the reason.

‘But what was lovely, the fabulous Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden, her niece got in touch with me when [my daughter] Hilda was born to let me know that her birthday month is the same as Jean’s birthday month.

Jennie continued: ‘And it was the month she sadly died in. It was really nice, I loved that.’

The star, who plays Fiz Stape, welcomed Hilda with husband Chris Farr in October 2018.

Hilda, a cleaner at the Rovers Return Inn, was known for her gossipy and busybody ways but was also involved in some of the funniest storylines on the show.

Before Hilda’s birth, Jennie previously told Lorraine that Corrie would probably be the inspiration for her baby’s name.

Jennie revealed in 2018: ‘It will probably be named after a Coronation Street character like Albert was, but not on purpose.

‘But all the gorgeous names have all been in Coronation Street. So probably that.’

Meanwhile, Corrie will be returning with six episodes per week starting from Monday.

The episodes were reduced due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Jennie is still confused to how the crew did it.

‘I don’t quite know how we’ve managed that, but this Monday coming it’ll be six episodes a week,’ Jennie explained. ‘People need their Corrie.’
