Jannik Sinner Hyped for 1st Australian Open Win in Classic 2024 Final vs. Medvedev

Medvedev #Medvedev

The 2024 Grand Slam season open in dramatic fashion as Jannik Sinner overcame an 0-2 set deficit to beat Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s singles final of the Australian Open.

Serving at championship point, Sinner forced Medvedev out wide with a backhand down the line and followed up with a powerful forehand winner to seal the victory.

Medvedev was firmly in the driver’s seat through the first two sets. He had combined to hit seven aces and 23 winners. Sinner may have suffered from a bit of a hangover after the emotional high of upsetting Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Not to mention, this was the first major final of his career.

But the 22-year-old showed a lot of poise with his back against the wall. Medvedev seemed to steadily wear down as well, the toll of already playing three five-setters in Melbourne starting to show.

Sinner turned the tables on the Russian in the third set and didn’t look back.

For Medvedev, this is the third time in four years he has finished runner-up in the Australian Open and the second time he failed to close after going up two sets to none. Rafael Nadal denied the 27-year-old in 2022.

Given his age, this almost certainly won’t be the last time Sinner is in the final of a Grand Slam tournament, and it may not be the only major title he adds to his trophy cabinet.

The young Italian certainly picked a dramatic way to make his breakthrough.
