Pundits Jamie Redknapp and Les Ferdinand disagreed over Newcastle’s first goal against Tottenham on Sunday, as Redknapp told Antonio Conte he should be ‘so disappointed’ with the refereeing and VAR.

Son Heung-min had a great chance to open the scoring for Tottenham in the 11th minute. Harry Kane sent Son through on goal and he attempted to chip over Nick Pope. However, the South Korean didn’t get enough contact on his effort and this gave Pope the chance to save.

Newcastle shocked Tottenham in the 31st minute by taking the lead. Fabian Schar drove a long ball over the top and Hugo Lloris came out to meet it. But he was closed down and blocked off by Callum Wilson, who sent the goalkeeper to the floor and proceeded to finish into an open net from 30 yards out.

And he was then joined on the scoresheet by Miguel Almiron ten minutes later, with the wide man scoring a great solo goal.

Ferdinand and Redknapp were in disagreement over whether Wilson’s block on Lloris was a foul during Sky Sports’ half-time analysis.

Ferdinand said (23/10, at 17:23): “Normally the goalkeeper would get this decision. I’m glad in some ways he didn’t, because Lloris ran into him.

“Great run from Wilson first of all, good ball. Lloris takes the touch. I don’t see how he [Wilson] can get out of the way.”

Redknapp interrupted by saying: “I think it’s a foul, I think he impedes the progress of the opponent there. Wilson bumps into him.

“Unbelievable composure and ability to score. But I would be so disappointed if I was the Spurs manager.”

Ferdinand replied: “The finish, the composure was excellent. If it was the other way round I think it’s the same decision. It’s a coming together.”

Ferdinand then gave his opinion on Newcastle’s second goal, which saw Almiron get the better of Ryan Sessegnon and Clement Lenglet before finishing from close range.

“He picks the ball up and goes past the defenders with pace,” Ferdinand said. “He gives him [Lenglet] absolutely no chance. He’s in that rich vein of form that that he just slides it past Lloris.”

Redknapp added: “He faces him up, knocks it past him and leaves him for dead. This is what I love seeing wide players do.”

Ferdinand continued: “A year ago you would have envisioned him going past Lenglet but there would have been no end product. But now his confidence is up.”

Meanwhile, Tim Sherwood feels ensuring Conte remains as Tottenham manager beyond this season is crucial to keeping two star men at the club.
