Jamie Carragher enjoyed himself as much as Gary Neville didn’t as the former Liverpool man shared a picture of the two as they watched the Reds hammer Manchester United.

The Red Devils made the trip to Anfield with plenty of optimism following their recent Carabao Cup victory, but endured an afternoon to forget. Merseyside has not been a happy hunting ground for United in recent seasons and they again were undone by their arch rivals.

Liverpool smashed seven past Erik ten Hag’s side on a rain-soaked afternoon, which was greatly welcomed by Carragher on commentary. Neville didn’t share those emotions as he lamented his former side, but it didn’t stop his Sky Sports colleague sharing a picture that summed up the occasion as it unfolded.

The Reds have been hugely inconsistent this term but continue to produce moments of quality. Sunday afternoon was another example as they scored six second-half goals with Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino all getting in on the act.

It means United slip away from the top two of Manchester City and Arsenal whilst Liverpool further their top four ambitions as they closed to within three points of Tottenham in fourth, who have played a game more.

Neville’s face on the gantry sums up his emotions with the pundit taking aim at his former club and some of their players – namely Bruno Fernandes. The forward strides made by United this term have been noted, but their performance still left him fuming.

He said on Sky Sports: “Look, that first 40 minutes would be what I would call a classic away performance at Anfield where I thought Manchester United weathered the storm and it looked like they were gonna go and get the goal and go ahead at half-time, but they conceded just on the stroke of half-time.

“The second half has been an absolute disgrace – a shambles – epitomised no more by the captain, Bruno Fernandes, who I think has been embarrassing at times in this game. But, I have to say, it’s not their usual performance, it’s not their usual form, it’s not their usual spirit, and he [Erik ten Hag] will deal with it, I’m sure. Very quickly, like he’s dealt with other difficult situations this season.

Neville also lamented Fernandes as he seemed to express frustration that he’d been left on whilst his team-mates were subbed off. “Bruno Fernandes is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised saying why isn’t it me coming off? Honestly, I have to say that some of his behaviour in this second half has been a disgrace,” he said.
