Jamie Carragher says the red card shown to AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori in their Champions League match against Chelsea ‘feels harsh’.
Tomori was sent off after just 18 minutes as he appeared to tug Mason Mount on the shoulder inside the box, with the Chelsea midfielder staying on his feet.
England international Tomori and his AC Milan team-mates were shell-shocked by the decision and swarmed around German referee Daniel Siebert to convince him to change his mind, but his call stood as he awarded Chelsea a penalty.
Jorginho slotted home the spot kick to give Graham Potter’s side a 1-0 lead at the San Siro and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled it after 34 minutes.
‘The red card for Tomori feels harsh,’ Carragher posted in a now deleted tweet on Tuesday night.
‘But what happened to double jeopardy? Could it not just be a penalty and no red card [shrugging emoji].’
Tomori, who joined AC Milan from Chelsea just last year, had spoken in the build up to the match about how the Italian champions’ defeat to the Blues last week at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture had left him ‘angry’.

‘After the match against Chelsea I was angry and I wanted to give everything on the pitch,’ the 24-year-old said.
‘I wanted to cancel the performance against Chelsea and I expressed how I felt. Every game I try to give my best.
‘Last week I know I didn’t do that and that was really disappointing for me. In football you rarely get another chance to put it right.
‘And we have as a team, and I have personally, another chance to put that to bed.
‘We have a chance to prove that we’re better than that, I have a chance to prove that I’m better than that, and we have, not that we needed any extra motivation, but after last week we have that extra motivation to push us to try to go for the win especially in front of our own fans as well.
‘We don’t need motivation but we will push even harder. It wasn’t the real Milan and it wasn’t me.
‘We have to learn from last week and it’s important for the team’s growth.’
Tomori was mocked on social media by some Chelsea fans following his first-half red card.
‘No way Tomori made all that speech just to get a red card in the first half?’ one user posted.
‘Tomori chatted all week to get sent off in 15 minutes,’ posted another.
