Jamie Carragher has insisted Everton made ‘the right decision’ to sack Frank Lampard.

Lampard was relieved of his duties as Toffees boss earlier today by phone call after less than a year in charge, leaving the club 19th in the Premier League with no win in 10 games.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, bemoaned the impact of the new signings under Lampard, but insisted he does need to take the blame.

‘I do feel it is the right decision’, he began. ‘I think Frank got the job in the back of Rafa Benitez having a similar run, with them bottom of the league bar Southampton, I don’t think Frank can have too many complaints.

‘He hasn’t spent a lot of money. They lost Richarlison who was their best player last season. When you look at the attacking players he’s bought in Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek, they weren’t really a success. He brought in McNeil and Maupay, they’ve not done anything.

‘The defensive signings have been ok but the attackers haven’t done anywhere near enough.

Gary Neville meanwhile, slammed the Everton board for allowing ‘years of failure’ at the club, despite the money invested in the squad.

He pointed out the size of the club in comparison to other Premier League sides, insisting that they should be nowhere near the trouble they find themselves in.

He said: ‘I look at Everton, even two or three years ago, they were clearing out the sorts science department. They were blaming the soldiers rather than the generals.

‘I say they’re a team to watch every year, you always think they’re going to get it right with the money they’ve spent. If you have seven, eight, nine years of failure you’ve got to stop looking on the football pitch and start looking above them.

‘Everton are the equal of Chelsea and city in terms of scale and size.’
