James Norton has revealed Sarah Lancashire actually convinced Sally Wainwright to change the ending of Happy Valley.

The exceptional police drama will come to an end on Sunday night, with the explosive trailer teasing the final showdown between Lancashire’s Sergeant Catherine Cawood and her arch-nemesis Tommy Lee Royce (Norton).

Norton and Lancashire were both the first to read the scripts for the last ever episode, and the former Corrie actress had some thoughts.

‘We had one version of the end that didn’t feel quite right,’ Norton told The Big Issue. ‘Sally knew it and Sarah spoke up and said it doesn’t feel right.

‘A month later, we got a new script and it all fell into place. It was magical.’

The actor also admitted he’s not ready for it to end and if it was down to him Happy Valley would ‘keep going’.

‘But deep down I’m with Sally. This is the right call. So I hope the ending doesn’t disappoint,’ he added.

It was reported the cast had filmed multiple endings so that no one knew how it will all end until the viewers at home did too.

Ryan Cawood actor Rhys Connah, however, insisted that’s ‘not true’ but they did film different versions of the same ending.

Fans have been packing social media with various theories, from Neil being Tommy’s father to Ryan secretly plotting against Tommy.

However, everyone’s main concern is for Catherine after Tommy revealed his plan to kill her before running away with Ryan.

Will he succeed?

Happy Valley concludes Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
