James Milner Comments On European Super League

In a game that was over shadowed by the recent announcements of the formation of the European Super League, Liverpool suffered yet another disappointing result, drawing 1-1 away to Leeds. 

Before the game the Leeds United players wore shirts as they warmed up which read “The Champions League” followed by “Earn it”. Liverpool certainly earned their lead in the game after a very energetic first thirty minutes from the Reds. 

A wonderful ball from Diogo Jota followed by a fantastic chip from Trent Alexander Arnold led to Sadio Mane slotting the ball home ending his goal draught. 

The second half of the game told a much different story as the best chances came from Leeds. Liverpool had more opportunities to further their lead but like in previous games they failed to execute their chances. As the half went on Liverpool disappeared further and Leeds finally levelled the score with a late header from Diego Llorente. 

Former Leeds United player and Liverpool Vice Captain James Milner spoke after the game and the focus was unsurprisingly on the news of the European Super League. In an interview with Sky Sports, Milner complemented his former side and Liverpool’s failure to capitalise on Leeds mistakes. The conversation quickly switched to the ELS discussions and the potential impact it had on the game.

“There’s a lot going on but we just have to try and focus on the games and try be professional.” 

James Milner also acknowledged that Liverpool players were unaware about the recent news stating, “The first we heard of it was yesterday. There’s a lot of questions. Everyone has their opinions.”

Milner went on to express his personal opinions on the matter and how he sides with fans and other members of the football community.

“I don’t like it and hopefully it doesn’t happen. I don’t like it for the same reason as everyone else. I can only agree with everything that’s been said about it.” 

The midfield man admitted he was disheartened regarding the unwelcome spotlight the European Super League talks have had on Liverpool as a team saying, “Players obviously had no say and I think the welcome we got to the ground tonight is a bit unjust because we are here to play football and we have no control over it.”

After Jordan Henderson, Milner is arguably the biggest leader in the dressing room and his comments will be seen as echoing the thoughts of the entire team. It is clear players will not be afraid to express their opinion regarding the controversial news and fans can only hope it leads to the European Super League being scrapped.
