James Bond Origin-Story Game in Works From Developer of ‘Hitman’ Series

Bond — James Bond — is coming to a console and computer screen near you with an all-new origin story about the iconic British superspy.

IO Interactive, in collaboration with MGM, EON Productions (the production entity owned by the Broccoli/Wilson family) and game financier Delphi, announced that it is developing and publishing the first-ever Bond origin story with the working title “Project 007.” IO Interactive, founded in 1998, has produced multiple award-winning game titles in the stealth/espionage genre, including the “Hitman” franchise.

The company didn’t announce an expected release date. “Project 007” is currently in active development at IO Interactive’s offices in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden. Both locations are recruiting talent from around the world to build out the title. “Project 007” will be powered by IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier game-engine technology.

The 25th installment in the James Bond film series, “No Time to Die,” is currently slated to hit theaters globally on April 2, 2021, after MGM rescheduled the release date several times because of the COVID pandemic. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, “No Time to Die” stars Daniel Craig in his fifth and final turn as the legendary British Secret Service Agent 007.

“Creating an original Bond game is a monumental undertaking and I truly believe that IO Interactive, working closely with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can deliver something extremely special for our players and communities,” Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, said in announcing “Project 007.”

There have been several games featuring James Bond over the years, and now the franchise will spin a new tale in “Project 007.”

“Working with our partners at EON and the talented team at IO Interactive, we plan to bring a new take on this legendary franchise to gamers and Bond fans around the world,” Robert Marick, MGM’s EVP of global consumer products and experiences, said in a statement. “IO Interactive are masters of crafting living, breathing worlds of immersive storytelling.”
