Jaime Munguia TKOs Kamil Szeremeta in six rounds, eyes potential world title fights at middleweight

Former light-middleweight world champion Jaime Munguia successfully ventured on with his journey up at 160, defeating Kamil Szeremeta by way of corner stoppage after six rounds and keeping his name in the middleweight championship boxing scene.

The fight started fairly quiet, with Szeremeta attempting to come forward and work the jab, while Munguia stayed patient and had a defensive focus. Munguia did have the better power shots, however, landing a notable one-two during the second round.

From that point, Munguia began to apply pressure and constantly backed up, turning things up and connecting more. Szeremeta held his own and landed his fair share, but he was now on the back foot and being the more defensive fighter.

Munguia continued to control the fight and landed several significant shots in the sixth round. Szeremeta displayed toughness but appeared to be in trouble.

And it was after that round Szeremeta withdrew from the fight in his corner, allowing Munguia to keep both his unbeaten record and the WBO-NABO intercontinental middleweight title.

Munguia is now 3-0 since moving to 160 at the start of 2020, while Szeremeta has now tasted back-to-back defeats, losing for the first time as a pro in December in a failed challenge of Gennadiy Golovkin’s IBF middleweight crown.

Following the fight, Munguia displayed interest in challenging for the WBC or WBO middleweight titles — Munguia is top contender to both — or fight Gabe Rosado, who scored an incredible comeback KO victory on the undercard, near the end of the year.

The WBO middleweight title is currently held by Demetrius Andrade, while the WBC title will be on the line later tonight when Jermall Charlo defends against Juan Macias Montiel.

Jaime Munguia vs. Kamil Szeremeta takes place on Saturday, June 19, 2021, live from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, TX. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
