Jacob deGrom undergoing Tommy John surgery in $185 million Rangers disaster

Jacob deGrom’s first season with the Rangers is ending in disaster.

The former Mets ace will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

“This stinks,” deGrom said through tears on Tuesday, according to the Dallas Morning News. “It’s not ideal. But at least we know what it is now. I want to get it fixed and will set a goal to be back before the end of next year.”

DeGrom, who over the winter left the Mets after nine seasons to sign a five-year, $185 million contract with Texas, has not pitched since April 28 due to elbow inflammation.

“We have gone backwards. The MRI revealed damage that was significant,” Rangers GM Chris Young said of the injury, per the Dallas Morning News.

“I’m glad we have clarity. Everyone being in the dark was not good. Now we have a course of action and we will attack it.”

The two-time Cy Young winner was moved to the 60-day injured list on Monday.

The 34-year-old was 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA and 45 strikeouts over his first six starts this season.

DeGrom, who had various arm issues with the Mets, had his first Tommy John surgery in 2010 when he was in the minors.

Over his final two seasons with the Mets, deGrom made just 26 starts, including 11 last season, when he had a 3.08 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 64 ⅓ innings.

The four-time All-Star had a 2.52 ERA with 1,607 strikeouts in 1,326 innings during his nine years in Flushing.

DeGrom’s final start with the Mets came in Game 2 of the wild-card round against the Padres in October, when he allowed two runs in six innings to earn the win.
