He was let go by Dundee United after a disastrous run of results which included a 7-0 second leg European defeat to AZ Alkmaar.
It’s a part of the country Ross knows well from his playing days at Hartlepool, as well as his managerial stint with the Black Cats.
A Newcastle statement read: “Jack will work closely with the club’s Academy director, Steve Harper, and management team to provide support to the academy’s coaching structure and players in the Under-9 to Under-16 age groups.”
Steve Harper said: “Jack is a very experienced manager, coach and coach educator.
“His knowledge and experience will be of huge benefit to us during his time here.”
His arrival follows Neil Winskill’s deployment to a coaching role with the Magpies’ Under-21 side.
He’s got almost 300 senior games under his belt as a coach at clubs including Alloa Athletic, St Mirren, Sunderland, Hibernian and Dundee United.
Ross was close to being appointed Motherwell manager prior to the appointment of Stuart Kettlewell – only to pull out at the 11th hour/
The former St Mirren, Hibs and Dundee United gaffer was on ‘Well’s three-man short-list to replace sacked Stevie Hammell – but he informed Fir Park chiefs the job is NOT for him.
