On Wednesday, 5 August 2020 the Ivorian government endorsed the appointment of Bamba Siaka as a member of the Central Commission of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI, electoral body).

“The Council has given its agreement with a view to the appointment of Mr. Bamba Siaka as a member of the Central Commission of the CIS in respect of the opposition parties”, announced Sidi Tiémoko Touré, government spokesman.

According to Touré, who is also the Ivorian Minister of Communication and Media, with this appointment of Bamba, the Ivorian opposition is “engaged in the electoral process and the government for its part, will play its part”.

The President of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI, opposition) Henri Konan Bédié appointed Bamba Siaka as the representative of his party at the Central Commission of the CEI a few days ago.

This entry of the PDCI into the Central Commission of the CIS comes after an order from the Head of State amending the law on the CIS in order to allow the allocation of seats in this commission to opposition parties whose representation in parliament is the most significant.

Thus, the Central Commission of the CEI now has sixteen members instead of fifteen, including three personalities proposed by the government and four proposed by the opposition.
