ITV’s most complained-about shows including the daytime hit than got 80,000 Ofcom objections and is still on air

ITV has seen some of its television shows receive Ofcom objections that hit the thousands over the years.

And it’s actually Good Morning Britain that has had the most complaints, according to data from TECC.

With a huge 75,623 complaints made in total during that time, GMB makes up a share of 36.63 of all official TV related moans.

Here, we take a look at the ITV shows that’ve scored highest where Ofcom complaints are concerned.

Good Morning Britain – 75,623 complaints

Good Morning Britain has received 75,623 complaints between the period of 2020 and 2022.

This would make the daytime TV show the most complained-about show on ITV.

More than 41,000 viewers complained to the media watchdog after Piers Morgan’s rant about Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview.

As a result, the interview received the most Ofcom complaints in a decade.

But the show has had Ofcom complaints about all sorts of other moments too.

Piers’ fiery chat with Health Secretary Matt Hancock garnered 600 complaints.

And nearly 300 complained after Tory MP Andrew Bridgen was grilled by Piers over the government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis.

And the presenter sparked more than 390 complaints for mocking PM Boris Johnson and comparing him to scarecrow Worzel Gummidge.

More recently, GMB was hit with 103 complaints from viewers who were furious with Matt Hancock.

And the popular show came under fire over words said by Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu during a discussion on the Royal Family in May of this year.

Ofcom, the media watchdog, confirmed it had received 52 complaints over the broadcast.

Love Island – 42,944 complaints

Love Island hasn’t got off scot free, as the reality show came in second place when it came to complaints

In the same two-year timeframe, the sun-kissed programme racked up 42,944.

Out of that, a whopping 24,763 viewers took offence to Faye Winter’s explosive and “toxic” row with Teddy Soares in 2021.

The incident, which saw Faye swear and scream in partner Teddy’s face, is the most complained about moment in Love Island history.

This year, more than 1,000 people complained over the show’s explosive Movie Night row, and Molly Marsh’s return.

There were a total of 466 complaints about Molly being allowed back in the villa after being dumped, as well as 957 complaints about July 9’s Movie Night episode.Ofcom was also inundated with complaints after viewers said the Islanders were ganging up against Molly’s man Zachariah Noble.

And 155 viewers contacted the broadcasting regulator after finding scenes involving Jess and Molly difficult to watch.

Britain’s Got Talent – 29,561 complaints

Britain’s Got Talent was hit with huge numbers of complaints in 2020 following Diversity’s Black Lives Matter performance.

Altogether, the ITV1 talent show – hosted by Ant and Dec – received 29,561 Ofcom complaints between 2020 and 2022, but 24,500 of those were about Diversity’s routine.

This year the show was flooded by Ofcom complaints after American Thomas Vu undertook his nail-bitingly tricky stunt on stage.

He went on to solve a Rubik’s Cube while he was covered in flames – leaving Simon Cowell and the rest of the Britain’s Got Talent panel stunned.

Some fans were not convinced it should have aired at all.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has told The Sun it received 334 official complaints shortly after the episode was broadcast.

Many of the shows’ acts have been subject to complaints over the years.

Another this year to have received Ofcom complaints was one very “windy” performance.

The act in question saw Ichikawa Koikuchi take to the stage to show off his routine which saw him blow out candles, set off a party horn and pop a balloon with his own farts.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has told The Sun it received 66 official complaints shortly after the episode was broadcast.

This Morning has been rocked with Ofcom complaints over its time for various different show segments.

The TV watchdog confirmed that they received 55 official complaints from upset viewers over Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s “queue jump” apology.

Fans were left fuming at Alison Hammond in April, too, as dozens wrote to the official broadcast regulator about a row over theatre etiquette.

This Morning received 66 complaints over the broadcast on April 7 2023.

And the show received hundreds of Ofcom complaints after they offered to pay energy bills as a competition prize on the Spin to Win game.

The TV watchdog confirmed that they received 170 official complaints from upset viewers.

Another 231 Ofcom complaints came during a segment about dairy plant-based milks, as well as 43 complaints after Samantha Yardley said overweight people should be restricted from buying big clothes and blocked from jobs.

Oprah With Harry and Meghan – 6,449 complaints

Complaints for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey soared into the thousands after it aired, with 6,449 altogether.

The tell-all chat, which was watched by 12.4million viewers when it first aired in the UK, made a series of fierce revelations about the Royal Family.

Ofcom has not revealed which elements of the interview the complaints referred to.

During the conversation with Oprah, the couple made a series of shocking allegations – most damagingly of all that an unnamed member of the Royal Family had made a racist comment about the colour of son Archie’s skin.

The Duchess also said she was prevented from seeking mental health support when she was in crisis.

Lorraine – 4,465 complaints

Lorraine has received thousands of complaints too.

An episode of the presenter’s ITV programme which aired in 2021 attracted complaints to broadcasting regulator Ofcom after a discussion about the Coronavirus vaccine.

Lorraine had said those declining to get jabbed needed to be “protected from themselves” and Dr Hilary spoke about the safety of vaccines.

Ofcom confirmed it received 3,743 complaints.

GP Dr Hilary said: “Those people who haven’t been vaccinated, we’d really love you to think again and be vaccinated.”

Lorraine replied: “That’s a figure that we have to really concentrate on, 90% of people in hospital have not been vaccinated.”

But it outraged viewers of the show, who said the figures were incorrect.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! received nearly 2,000 Ofcom complaints because of Matt Hancock’s stint on the show.

The former health secretary, 44 – who placed third on the series of the ITV show – was arguably one of the most controversial celebrities to ever step foot in the jungle.

Over the weeks he was on the series, 3,727 people wroteto the regulator to complain about something on their screens that they were not happy about.

And 1,890 of those were related to the inclusion of the MP in the series.

Rounding on the list is Loose Women, with 2,017 complaints.

Earlier this year, the show was slammed with Ofcom complaints over ‘baby goth’ comments.

On December 22 last year, ITV aired a TikTok video which showed “a day in a life of a gothic baby” created by Rebecca Hardy.

The viral clip of her daughter’s look, as well as her nursery, which was inspired by the Addams family.

Katie wasn’t a huge fan of the interior of the nursery and said “babies don’t like that!”

It was reported that 69 people complained to the TV regulator because of her comments.

A further 87 viewers then did the same, according to Ofcom’s reports.

Janet Street Porter and Charlene White had a heated debate on the show too, which led to over 200 people complaining to the broadcasting regulator.

The presenters spoke over each other as they clashed over the shocking claims that people are being stopped at the Ukrainian borders because of the colour of their skin.

And the media regulator was inundated with complaints after Rod Stewart’s wife, Penny Lancaster, admitted to letting her baby cry to put her baby’s needs first.
