Susanna Reid clashes with Tory MP over Labour’s plan

Susanna Reid was locked in a fiery clash with Tory MP Mel Stride on Good Morning Britain today.

The TV presenter sat alongside Richard Madeley on the ITV breakfast show today, where they interviewed Conservative MP Mel Stride, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. Mr Stride was asked about Rishi Sunak appearing to accept a bet from Piers Morgan over the Rwanda bill and whether deportation flights to Rwanda will get going before the election.

Rishi Sunak has been branded “out of touch” for agreeing to the bet. Piers had said to Mr Sunak: “I’ll bet you £1,000 pounds to a refugee charity, you don’t get anybody on those planes before the election. Will you take that bet?” with Mr Sunak replying: “Well, I want to get the people on the planes, right? Of course, I want to get the people on the plane… Right? I am working incredibly hard to get the people on the planes,” as he shook Piers’ hand and thus seemingly confirming he had taken on the bet.

As he appeared on the show, Mr Stride was asked about the Prime Minister taking on the bet. Speaking to Susanna and Richard, he shared: “The Rwanda bill we got through the Commons and is going through the House of Lords, that Labour are opposing because they have absolutely no plan on any of this stuff incidentally…”

However, Susanna interrupted to say that Labour did have a plan. She told him: “No that’s absolutely not true to say Labour don’t have a plan. They do have a plan which is to smash the gangs. I’m not a Labour Party spokesperson but I just think people need to be aware in the run up to a general election, your line as ministers will every morning be Labour have not got a plan. And in this case, it’s simply not true. You may not agree with their plan, and you may think there are holes in their plan, but it is not true, and I’m not allowing every government minister just to repeat ‘Labour have not got a plan’ when they’re not the person we’re interviewing.”

He tried to speak over her multiple times, saying: “That’s not a plan Susanna, that’s not a plan,” before adding: “You just said Labour’s plan was to ‘smash’ the gangs or whatever you termed it. That’s not a plan, that’s an aspiration.” However, Susanna shut down Mr Stride, sharing: “Mel Stride, you are not the Labour spokesperson and the Labour spokesperson is not here, so I’m not going to have you divert to what Labour are or aren’t going to do.”
