Dan Walker teased by Quek over ‘shimmying’ in studio

Dan, 44, was on hand to host coverage of the Tokyo Olympic Games alongside former Team GB Hockey player Sam Quek, 32, as he takes a break from his role on BBC Breakfast. After the presenters watched Tom, 27, and his teammate, Matty Lee, 23, secure gold in the Men’s synchronised 10m platform, they were in jubilation. With Adam Peaty, 26, having also won gold in the pool earlier on in the morning, BBC’s Dan could not use another term than the word “manic” to describe the UK’s success.

Switching back to the virtual studio in the UK, viewers heard the father of three say: “Wow. How’s your Monday going?

“Look at [our guest] Chris Mears who knows what it’s like to win Olympic gold. That was so intense,” Dan continued.

“If you’ve just turned on and you’re wondering what’s going on and thinking ‘Where is the news?’ This is the news.

“Tom Daley and Matty Lee have just won Olympic gold and what an incredible start,” he added to which Sam said: “It took Tom four Olympics.

“And Matty Lee, Olympic debut, I mean what a story. Incredible,” she remarked as Chris, 28, gave his reaction to the diving success.

The Olympian and former gold medal winner replied: “I need another 10 minutes. Oh my God. Olympic champions, I just can’t believe it.

“Tom, coming off the back of Rio which was obviously so heartbreaking for him, even when he got his bronze, he wanted more from his individual.

“For him to stand up and put that performance out there, to be honest, I expected it. Matty Lee in his first Olympic Games and to stand up there like a stallion and hit that hard was perfection.

“I’m so, so proud of both of them,” he continued to which Dan added: “I wish we’d had a camera [on Chris] when they pulled out [the water] from their final dive.”

Bit like a Manic Monday

“Like I said, I need another 10 minutes because that was incredible,” Chris shared as he continued his analysis.

“They’re going to inspire a whole generation with that performance,” he added with Dan explaining it was “one of those mornings”.

The presenter said: “You remember Super Saturday from London 2012, it’s a bit like a Manic Monday this because there is so much happening.

“We had Adam Peaty winning gold earlier on today, we’ve had a silver medal in the triathlon and there’s Taekwondo coming on which we will hopefully get a medal in as well.”

DON’T MISS…

Shortly after this discussion, Team GB won yet another gold as Tom Pidcock, 21, secured the medal in Men’s Cross-Country Mountain Biking.

This brought the UK’s medal count up to six at this point in the morning, with a bronze also won in Taekwondo on Sunday.

Commenting on Tom’s success, Dan said: “I can’t quite get my head around this. I hope you’re enjoying Olympic Breakfast this morning.

“Another gold medal. What a performance in the Cross-Country,” he added and the discussion about the gold medals didn’t stop there.

With Lauren Williams, 22, heading into the Taekwondo gold medal match on Monday afternoon, Dan saw this as another chance for Team GB to secure a meal.

In a discussion with another guest about the jubilation, the presenter said: “Magic Monday? Manic Monday? Whatever you want to call it.

“It feels manic and magic. Three gold medals before 8am in the morning, that’s what we like,” the father of three remarked.

He also confirmed they would be speaking with some of the winners throughout the morning to congratulate them on their success.

Olympic Breakfast airs weekdays at 5am on BBC One.
