David Marshall, the Scotland goalkeeper, admitted he was numb with emotion after producing the save in a penalty shoot-out that took the country to its first major finals in 22 years.

Their Euro 2020 play-off final against Serbia was decided on spot kicks after Ryan Christie’s goal early in the second half, a cruel last-minute equaliser from Luka Jovic and a goalless period of extra time.

In a shoot-out of unbearable tension, Scotland scored all five of their penalties — through Leigh Griffiths, Callum McGregor, Scott McTominay, Oli McBurnie and Kenny McLean — and Serbia responded by netting their first four.
