‘It’s crazy to think about’: ‘Ponytail Pete’ breaks NCAA all-time record

In the late 1960s, Pete Maravich set the NCAA all-time scoring record — men’s or women’s. Nearly half a century later, the person to break it is the one they call Pistol Pete with a ponytail.

Clark’s 18th point came on a free throw in the second quarter, and she has now climbed the mountain of all-time great collegiate scorers.

“It’s crazy to think about. If you would’ve told me that, you would’ve been insane,” Clark said. “I don’t think people really understand how many amazing players have come and been able to score the ball and do it at such a high rate.

“To do it for teams that are really good and to be in the same realm as all these players that have been so successful. Hopefully somebody comes after me and breaks my records and I can be there supporting them.”

“They used to call her ‘Ponytail Pete’ as a kid and now she has the record — it’s ironic,” head coach Lisa Bluder said. “I’m just so happy for Caitlin — I think she represents the university and our sport so well.”
