An empty school is among the buildings hit as Israel, Hamas and other Gaza groups exchanged rocket fire on Monday and into Tuesday afternoon.

While there were no injures reported near the school in Ashkelon, a city not far from the Gaza Strip, other areas of Israel reported dozens dead as a result of rocket fire. One of those rockets, which struck in the Gaza Strip, reportedly killed 24 Palestinians, including children, media reports said.

However, Israel said that 15 of the deaths were militants. Six Israelis died in a separate strike from Gaza that struck an apartment building.

The rockets are the latest in a series of conflicts between Israel and Palestine, which included a clash at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Monday where over 200 were injured. Media reports from around Jerusalem said that over 700 people were injured in clashes in and near the city, with 500 of those receiving some sort of treatment at local hospitals.

Over 200 rockets have been fired from Gaza since Hamas gave Israeli forces a deadline to withdraw from Al-Aqsa, the Associated Press reported. The mosque is one of the city’s holiest sites and, like others in the area, hotly disputed between Palestinians and Israel as to who has a claim to them.

Adding to the conflict is the imminent decision regarding the possible eviction of dozens of Palestinians from their homes in a Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

Internationally, multiple countries have called on both sides to ease tensions and cease fighting. Egypt, a regular mediator between Israel and Palestine, is engaged in “intensive” talks to obtain a cease-fire, an intelligence official told the Associated Press.

However, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Monday that the fighting “could continue for some time,” after rockets were launched toward Jerusalem, setting off warning sirens around the city.

“Whoever attacks us will pay a heavy price,” Netanyahu said at the time.
