Foreigners and injured Palestinians from Gaza arrived in Egypt through the Rafah crossing. The Israeli military said it struck a Hamas command complex in the Jabalia area of Gaza a day after an airstrike on a refugee camp there killed dozens of people.

Israeli airstrikes: The airstrike that hit the refugee camp Tuesday killed a Hamas commander, according to the Israeli military. Hamas said seven hostages, including three foreign passport holders, were killed in the Israeli strike. About 240 people have been taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.

Rafah border crossing: Gaza’s border with Egypt opened for the first time in the war for injured Palestinians and others to cross, with Americans among them. More than 400 people crossed into Egypt on Wednesday, including 45 injured, Egyptian officials said.

U.S. reaction: President Biden reiterated at a re-election fundraiser in Minnesota the calls from administration officials for a humanitarian pause in the Israel-Hamas war.

Casualties: Israel said 15 soldiers have been killed in northern Gaza. The Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry said more than 8,700 people had been killed, most of them women and children. It doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians. More than 1,400 in Israel died in the attacks that sparked the war, including over 300 Israel Defense Forces soldiers, Israeli officials said. The U.N. said 70 colleagues have died in Gaza.
