In wake of Covid-19 affecting the Indian cricket team in Sri Lanka, the BCCI has decided to add the five net bowlers to India’s primary T20I squad. Ishan Porel, Sandeep Warrier, Arshdeep Singh, R Sai Kishore and Simarjeet Singh – will now be part of the squad for the remaining T20Is.

“Based on the request of the Indian team management in Sri Lanka, the All-India Senior Selection Committee has named additions to India’s squad for the second and third T20Is,” the BCCI said in an official statement.

The development comes after a total of nine players – including Krunal Pandya who tested positive for Covid-19 – were effectively ruled out of the remaining two T20Is. While Covid-struck Krunal was never going to be in contention, the remaining eight players who were his close contacts have been asked to isolate as a precautionary measure. The eight players are Hardik Pandya, Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Krishnappa Gowtham, Ishan Kishan, Manish Pandey and Deepak Chahar.

With a total of 11 players to choose from, India handed debuts to Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Rana and Chetan Sakariya. While the second T20I would mark debuts for batsman Gaikwad and Padikkal, Rana and Sakariya made their India debuts during the third ODI, which the Shikhar Dhawan-led side lost. Rana scored 7 and Sakariya picked up 2/34 from four overs.
