Is Joel Embiid still on the Sixers’ injury report after being listed in the 12 games leading up to the All-Star break?
The Philadelphia 76ers are back on the court Thursday night to take on the Memphis Grizzlies. It marks the first game the Sixers will participate in since their victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers last Wednesday. However, it’s not the first game in over a week for Sixers center Joel Embiid.
This past Sunday night, Embiid participated in the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. As expected, Embiid was a starter in the matchup, playing for Team LeBron after becoming the first pick out of the starters’ pool. Leading up to the big game, Embiid was considering possibly sitting out.
As Embiid has battled foot soreness for several weeks, the star center acknowledged that his long-term health is more important than playing in the All-Star Game.
“I’m not healthy,” Embiid said last week. “I haven’t been healthy for the last three weeks. I was just trying to get to the All-Star break without missing games and stuff. I felt like I’ve reached a point where I really need to follow the doctor’s advice. Back then, he said I should’ve been sitting for two weeks. So, I’ll just see how the next few days go, and we’ll go from there.”
Although he considered missing the matchup, Embiid played in the All-Star Game. And although he’s been questionable leading up the Sixers’ previous 12 games, the team has left Embiid off the injury report for the first time since late January.
Barring any changes with his foot, Embiid is fully expected to play in Thursday’s game against the Grizzlies. When he faced the Grizzlies earlier in the year, Embiid checked in for 41 minutes. He scored 35 points while coming down with 11 rebounds and producing eight assists.
While Embiid had himself a decent night, the Sixers came up short of Memphis. They’ll look for revenge on Thursday when the shorthanded Grizzlies pay the Sixers a visit in South Philly.
