Supernatural recap: Season 15, episode 18
Episode 18 of Supernatural’s current season, titled Despair, has arguably been the most dramatic and heartwrenching of the season so far.
The episode opens with Jack in the Empty courtesy of Billie as she tries to get Chuck’s death book from Sam and Dean.
Jack is saved from the Empty in exchange for the death book but before Billie can make her escape, Dean fatally wounds her with her scythe.
The episode takes a dramatic turn when people from Apocalypse World begin to vanish and the team set to work to keep themselves protected.
Dean and Castiel, meanwhile, go on the hunt for Billie.
However, Dean and Castiel walk right into a trap and the fatally wounded Billie is keen on revenge.
Castiel knows that the only way to save Dean is to summon the Shadow.
In one of the most long-awaited scenes in Supernatural, Castiel finally admits his love for Dean and experiences a moment of true happiness.
This moment of happiness summons the Shadow who absorbs Billie and Castiel into the Empty, seemingly killing them for good.
In one final twist before the episode ends, every last person on Earth vanishes leaving just Dean, Sam and Jack left to take on Chuck.
The CW Dean and Castiel
Dean and Castiel first crossed paths way back in Supernatural season 4 when Castiel saved the older Winchester brother from hell, leaving a handprint on Dean’s shoulder.
Castiel has since appeared throughout Supernatural and has formed a strong bond with Dean.
The two are shown to be strong friends but there has always been a sense that there’s a little more to their relationship.
As such, Supernatural fans have been shipping Dean and Castiel for years, with the two earning the ship name, Destiel.
The CW Is Destiel canon?
This is one for Supernatural’s showrunners to decide as from our point of view, it’s a tricky one to answer.
While yes, Castiel does profess his love for Dean in Despair, he’s tragically killed off before either of the two can act on the news or for Dean to say that he reciprocates those feelings.
For a brief few moments, before Castiel is taken by the Shadow, you could argue that Destiel was indeed canon but it’s a very shortlived few moments.
Unless Dean and Sam are able to pull off a miracle in the final two episodes and save Castiel – Jack was saved from the Empty after all – it looks as if Destiel is over before it ever really got going.
Supernatural continues weekly on The CW with the 20th and final episode arriving on November 19th, 2020.
