Is Christian Serratos Singing in “Selena: The Series”?
SEVENTEEN #SEVENTEEN
Selena: The Series is finally here and while the show mostly focuses on her journey to superstardom, it’s the show’s soundtrack that also helps it stand out and set the mood throughout all of the different years it covers. Along with some fun tracks that Selena y los Dinos got to put their spin on throughout their time together, the series also features some of Selena’s original tracks that we all know and love. But fans are now also wondering if the show’s star, Christian Serratos is the one singing on the tracks or if it’s their favorite singer’s original work?
Here’s everything you need to know about Christian Serratos and her singing in Selena: The Series.
Is Christian actually singing or is it the original Selena?
Nope, actually, she decided to use Selena’s original recordings that we all know and love! Which means anytime you see Christian lip-syncing to one of Selena’s tracks, you’re probably listening to a performance you heard before.
In an interview to Variety, Christian admitted that she had the option to show off her own voice on the show, but decided against it.
“I recorded quite a few songs, and I think it was always supposed to be the actress singing but … I always wanted it to be Selena because I was such a fan. I think people were confused by that because I never wanted to be a pop star, but I always wanted to act in films where I got the opportunity to just sing. They were like, ‘Here’s your chance to show people you can sing.’ I was like, ‘But it’s not about me; it’s never been about me.’ I just want the fans to see their girl. I want them to see their girl. I don’t want to hear me. I want to hear Selena,” she said.
What about the moments where there isn’t a recording?
Of course, not every single singing moment in the series uses a recording. Luckily, the producers and Christian came prepared and she actually got to show off her voice a bit for those little moments.
“Yes. She worked with a coach, but we are excited that we get to use Selena’s voice and music when in those performances. The a cappella part, it’s all Christian. Especially when she’s recording or practicing her songs in those little moments, it’s all Christian,” creator and executive producer Moisés Zamora told Entertainment Tonight. “We were very excited that we were able to use Selena’s voice [because] it’s hard to replicate that. Cristian is a phenomenal singer, but if you don’t sound like her, you don’t sound like her. And I think fans will appreciate that we used Selena’s voice.”
