The Toronto Maple Leafs found themselves on the wrong side of a controversial call in their do-or-die Game 5 against the Florida Panthers on Friday.
Morgan Rielly appeared to score his second goal of the contest late in the second period to tie the game at 2-2, but the officials on the ice deemed the puck did not cross the goal line. After a lengthy review, the call was upheld, much to the dismay of Maple Leafs fans, who believed there was at least one angle that showed otherwise.
The NHL released the official ruling during the second intermission, stating the referee “deemed the play dead prior to the puck crossing the Florida line.”
Fans at Scotiabank Arena took out their frustration by throwing debris on the ice and starting a profane chant.
More to come.
