iPolitics AM: Trudeau visits Kanata construction site

After spending the last two weeks in quarantine following his first post-pandemic trek across the Atlantic Ocean, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will join Social Development Minister Ahmed Hussen and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson on the site of the Shepherds of Good Hope Living Residence, a “supportive housing project” currently under construction in the Ottawa suburb of Kanata, where, according to his itinerary, he’ll promote his government’s plans for “investing in affordable housing” before taking questions from reporters. Earlier in the day, he’s scheduled to speak at the Generation Equality Forum, a three-day virtual summit hosted by United Nations Women that bills itself as “the largest global feminist gathering since 1995.” It promises to bring together “governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector, and young people (to) drive gender equality forward.” (11:20 AM)

He’s also booked for a “virtual celebration” this evening to mark Portuguese Heritage Month, when he’ll “take part in a conversation” with Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa. (7:30 PM)

Elsewhere on the leaders’ circuit, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet continues his four-day sprint through Saguenay, while Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole headlines an evening “virtual meet and greet” for party supporters.

Meanwhile, with the Senate having formally signed off on her first-ever omnibus budget bill last night, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland teams up with Middle Class Prosperity Minister Mona Fortier and Small Business Minister Mary Ng to unveil “support for Canadian workers” at a virtual media availability. (11 AM)

Later today, Ng will join United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Mexico’s economy secretary, Tatiana Clouthier Carrillo, to mark the first anniversary of the cross-continental trade deal during a “virtual conversation” hosted by the Washington-based Wilson Center. (2 PM)
