Surrounded by supporters, Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague announced his re-election campaign for City Council at the Juneteenth Downtown Block Party on Thursday night.
“This last 2020 year, we have endured a lot as a community,” he said. “It’s been a challenge, but I want you to know that 2020 has been an opportunity for unity in Iowa City.”
Teague began his announcement from at Chauncey Swan Park but as soon as it started to rain the crowd moved inside a parking ramp, where he continued his speech and concluded by singing, “Lean On Me.”

The crowd joined in singing, as they did when he sang the same song during the first George Floyd rally in Iowa City last year.
Teague was first elected to the city council in October 2018. He was later selected to be mayor by members of the council in January 2020 and his current term ends in January 2022.
Teague is owner of Caring Hands & More, which offers services such as independent living and child care as well as cleaning and lawn care.
