Interstates looking ‘good’ Thursday morning, transportation officials say

Crews in both Louisville and southern Indiana spent more of the overnight hours treating high-priority roadways with salt and brine.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Most areas in Kentucky and southern Indiana were blanketed with snow throughout the afternoon and evening Wednesday. Snowfall totals ranged from 2 to 3 inches, making it our biggest snow of the season so far.

With the snow and cold temperatures comes the possibility of slick road conditions. School districts that normally have in-person instruction have moved to virtual learning Thursday and some districts are canceling classes altogether. Check out the latest closings here.

According to transportation officials in both Kentucky and Indiana, major roadways should be safe to travel Thursday morning.

Crews with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have been working all night to treat their snow routes. In the Louisville area, all routes have been treated at least once so far, and some are getting follow-up treatments. 

According to KYTC, around 200 people worked through the night to cover all 110 snow routes, which include high-priority interstates and roadways.

Natalie Garrett with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said traffic seems to be moving well on Indiana interstates so far. She said crews would continue to treat roads throughout the morning until around 8 a.m. Some trucks may stay out past that point depending on location and conditions. 

Despite the positive reports, officials are still urging drivers to use caution. 

With road temperatures hitting the freezing mark, there is the potential for slick spots to still be present on secondary roads, including off and on-ramps to the interstates. Neighborhood roads and side streets could be slushy or slippery as well, especially if they weren’t treated Wednesday.

There have been some reports of slick spots and crashes early Thursday morning, but no major injuries or delays have been reported so far.

Temperatures will stay below freezing for most of the day, so the snow on the ground likely won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. However, there isn’t any more winter weather expected in the forecast for Thursday.
