Internet legend has Sam Kerr in stitches

Matildas captain Sam Kerr netted the winner against Team GB, thumping a header onto the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net to send her teammates into absolute ecstasy.

Tillies coach Tony Gustavsson held himself back from going full Dean Boxall with his celebration, but deep down he was on the verge of an out-of-body experience himself.

The entire nation collectively gasped when Team GB’s Ellen White flicked a header past Matildas stopper Teagan Micah to make the score 4-3, to the Matildas, but thankfully proved to be nothing more than a late consolation.

Kerr and her teammates took to social media to express their joy after booking their spot in the semi-finals in Tokyo, and what perhaps seemed an innocent typo from the Chelsea striker at first allowed the internet do its thing.

The typo in Kerr’s tweet opened the door to someone buying a website domain, and linked it to a hilarious video that originated from A-League Memes.

Football journalist Daniel Garb hailed the internet legend, who at this point is unknown, for taking over the website domain, tweeting: “There are some geniuses out there.”

The Matildas’ journey to the final continues with a mouth-watering clash against Sweden in the semi-finals on Monday August 2, with kick-off scheduled at 9pm AEST.

The two sides met in the group stages, with the Swedes getting up 4-2 against Australia in a chaotic game.
