The first meeting of the UN Working Group was held in 1982 on Indigenous Populations. December 10, 1994 was marked as the initiation of the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People by UNGA on 21st December 1993. 1993 was declared as the International Year of the World’s Indigenous People. On December 23, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) passed a resolution 49/214 in which it was decided that August 9 will be marked as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People 2022: Significance

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is celebrated to focus the role of indigenous people and the need to preserve their rights, communities and knowledge they have collected and passed down over the centuries. Approximately 476 million indigenous peoples are residing in the 90 countries of the world. An estimated 7000 languages are spoken by the indigenous people and they also represent 5000 different cultures. Article 24 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples mention the rights of indigenous peoples to the medicines that they follow traditionally.
