A

number of people have taken to Twitter to complain that their Instagram account has been unfairly disabled.

Many people state that there is no reason for their account to be taken down and are demanding for access to be given back immediately.

Instagram has said it was aware of the problem and shared a statement on Twitter: “We’re aware that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We’re looking into it and apologize for the inconvenience. #instagramdown.”

Why has Instagram disabled my account?

Instagram hasn’t shared why the accounts are getting disabled, but it could be that one of its routine flushes of bot accounts has disabled real people’s accounts.

Bot accounts are those that are only created to act as fake followers or to spread spam. They are regularly deleted by Instagram so that only real, active users stay on the platform.

However, in this case it seems that hundreds of real Instagram users have been penalised for some reason.

Once disabled, an account is no longer visible to others and cannot be accessed. The only reason given is that it does not meet Instagram’s Community Guidelines.

If an account cannot be confirmed within 30 days, it will be permanently deleted.

To regain access to your account if you think it has been unjustly disabled, you can request a review from Instagram.

Try and login in as usual via the app, then follow the on-screen instructions after clicking ‘Disagree with decision’ to request for your account to be reinstalled.

Why am I losing Instagram followers?

You may have also noticed a sudden drop in Instagram followers. This is because a flurry of accounts appear to have been disabled.

This usually happens when Instagram purges bots and abandoned accounts, but it seems to be happening to real accounts that haven’t broken Instagram’s content policies.

Examples of accounts that may have legitimately broken Instagram’s content policies include those sharing nude or pornographic content, graphic imagery, or those otherwise found to be in breach of Instagram’s Community Guidelines.
