The Patrick Kane sweepstakes may be turning into an arms race between teams in the National Hockey League’s Atlantic Division.

Over the weekend NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the race for Kane’s services had largely come down to a pair of teams, with the Detroit Red Wings and the Florida Panthers believed to be clear frontrunners. On Monday, Friedman reiterated that he believes the Red Wings are emerging as one of the favorites to land Kane.

“Some of the winds are blowing towards Detroit,” reaffirmed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

The most interesting information revealed by Friedman on Monday however is that two other teams in the Atlantic Division are currently in the mix, potentially creating something of a 4-way arms race between the aforementioned Red Wings and Panthers as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.

“All I will say is this, there are a couple of teams out there who suspect that Toronto looked into it even though it doesn’t make sense because it’s kind of in Treliving’s DNA to look into things and there’s a couple of teams out there who suspect that Boston might be another team that’s poked around on this,” revealed Friedman.

While Friedman doesn’t appear to believe Kane has a great chance of ending up in a Maple Leafs uniform, he does think the Bruins are a legitimate contender.

“The thing about Boston is… it does kind of fit with Boston’s DNA of ‘We’re good what can we add at what cost?’ and that makes sense to me,” admitted Friedman.
