Netflix is starting 2023 with another cancelation. The adult animated series Inside Job is officially canceled on the streaming platform. Show creator and writer Shion Takeuchi confirmed the news on Twitter. The tweet can be read below.

I’m heartbroken to confirm that Netflix has decided to cancel season 2 of Inside Job. Over the years, these characters have become real people to me, and I am devastated not to be able to watch them grow up. Reagan and Brett deserved to get their ending and finally find happiness. And I would have loved to been able to share what was in store with you all.

To everyone who watched, thank you for coming along on the ride. Even though I’m sad, it helps to know that there’s people out there who cared just as much about these characters as me.

This news comes shortly after another writer, Chase Mitchell, posted vague tweets about a show being canceled. The tweets were quickly deleted after they were posted, but not before fans began to do their own research and concluded that the show he was mentioning was Inside Job. According to popculture.com, one of Mitchell’s tweets mentioned the then-unnamed streaming service’s stance on animation.

“I dunno if I was allowed to say this but honestly that streamer does not care about animation anymore so who gives a s—.”

Inside Job was created by Takeuchi, with Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch and BoJack Horseman director Mike Hollingsworth as executive producers. Takeuchi was previously a writer on Gravity Falls before working on Inside Job, which probably helped with inspiration for her own show. Inside Job tells the story of a world where all the greatest conspiracy theories are true, and the world is run by six different secret organizations. In the center of it all is our star, Regan Ridley (Lizzy Caplan), who leads her team of coworkers both in and out of shenanigans. According to Hirsch and Takeuchi, the series was inspired by shows like The X-Files and the fictional tabloid The Weekly World News. The series premiered on Oct. 22, 2021, with ten episodes, and the second part of the first season premiered on Nov. 18, 2022, with eight more episodes.

Upon its premiere, Inside Job was received favorably among audiences and critics. The show currently holds a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for the workplace comedy and mature themes. In June 2022, it was announced that the show was renewed for a second season. But it looks like something switched in that approval since its announcement.

This news is both a shock for fans of Inside Job and another reason to sigh angrily for fans of original Netflix animated content. The streaming service came under fire last year for doing a major mass layoff and canceling multiple animated projects, including titles like The Midnight Gospel, Q-Force, Bone, and much more. It’s never pleasant when a show gets the rug pulled out from under it before it can complete its story, especially when it has already laid the groundwork for so much more. Perhaps Takeuchi could shop the series to other streaming services similar to Lisa Hanawalt’s Tuca & Bertie, but considering that show’s fate at the hands of Adult Swim, is it even worth it? At this point, one thing is for sure: animation deserves better.
