Alan Joyce will be enjoying his early retirement from the comfort of a multi-million dollar penthouse in Sydney’s The Rocks – a far cry from the average retirement home.

Joyce made waves yesterday when he announced he would be stepping down as Qantas CEO two months ahead of schedule. His successor, Vanessa Hudson, is taking the reins from today.

Joyce will now have more free time to enjoy the home he shares with husband Shane Lloyd, which features views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

The couple originally planned to move into a four-bedroom waterfront mansion in Mosman, purchasing the property for a reported $19 million in March last year.

Originally built in 1908, the property overlooked the Sydney Harbour and featured its own private jetty, wine cellar and gym.

The pair embarked on internal renovations of the home, but never ended up living it. It sold for a reported $21 million in July this year.

After a change of heart, Joyce and Lloyd decided to expand their current home at The Rocks through the purchase of a neighbouring apartment.

“We were unexpectedly given the opportunity to secure the other half-level apartment where we live currently,” Joyce told the Mosman Daily.

“This meant we wouldn’t be moving to Mosman.”

Joyce and Lloyd reportedly paid about $9 million to acquire the three-bedroom apartment next door, increasing their floor space by 223 square metres. They purchased their first Rocks apartment for $4.575 million in 2008.

The couple also own an ocean-view Palm Beach holiday house, which they purchased for $5.25 million in 2015.

After 15 years as Qantas CEO, Joyce is expected to walk away with a $24 million final cash and share payout.
