The Boston Celtics’ star tandem of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown has earned a reputation as one of the NBA’s best duos. Not only has it been arguably the best 1-2 punch in the league this season, but it’s also been one of the greatest tandems in NBA history.

During Tuesday’s Celtics-Lakers showdown, the TNT broadcast showed a mindblowing stat that sums up Tatum and Brown’s dominance. They entered the game averaging a combined 57.5 points so far this season. That mark leads a list that includes a bunch of legendary names.

Forsberg: Where the Celtics stand in the race for individual recognition

Below Tatum and Brown on the leaderboard are Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant (57.2 ppg, 2001 Lakers), Larry Bird and Kevin McHale (54.2 ppg, 1987 Celtics), Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry (53.3 ppg, 2019 Golden State Warriors), and LeBron James and Dwyane Wade (52.2 ppg, 2011 Miami Heat).

Any time you’re on a list with those players, you’re doing something right.

Tatum and Brown both are on track to earn All-Star selections and All-NBA honors this season. As of Tuesday, Tatum is the odds-on favorite to win the 2022-23 NBA MVP award and Brown is beginning to insert himself into the MVP conversation.

The duo’s performance is one of many reasons the Celtics own the NBA’s best record at 21-7. If they keep this up, they could take home plenty of hardware next summer along with Banner 18.
