India’s cricket fans have been criticised yet again following the nation’s crushing World Cup loss to Australia.
Australia beat India by six wickets in the final on Sunday night to claim the nation’s sixth World Cup title and break the hearts of the home nation.
During the celebrations, the families of Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head, along with other players and some of the press, were subjected to vile online abuse.
Vini Maxwell, who is of Indian descent, has enjoyed travelling with her husband and their baby during the tournament but revealed she was sent “hateful vile” messages after the final.
“Aaaaand cue all the hateful vile DMS. Stay classy,” she wrote in a social media post with photos from their trip.
“Can’t believe this needs to be said BUT you can be Indian and also support the country of your birth where you have been raised and more importantly the team your husband and father of your child plays in #nobrainer
“Take a chill pill and direct that outrage towards more important world issues.”
Travis Head’s wife, Jess, was also subjected to abusive comments directed at her and their young child on her personal Instagram.
ESPN Australia’s Steve Smith shared photos of some threatening messages he had received warning him of violence.
Meanwhile Grade Cricketer host Ian Higgins posted a similarly disturbing message asking him to “kill yourself”.
New Zealand cricketer Jimmy Neesham was even mistakenly abused for being an Australian.
Several accounts apologised to the Australians on behalf of Indian fans and called for more respect.
“Travis Head has a one-year-old daughter, she is getting rape and death threats from Indian Cricket fans on Instagram. Glen Maxwell’s wife Vini Raman has also shared about threats she is getting,” a post on X read.
“Jimmy Neesham who has mistakenly as an Australian cricketer is getting abused from ICT supporters in DM and replies.
“Is this what we are reduced to? When did sports become a matter of threats and abuse?”
One commented on Vini Maxwell’s post: “Can’t believe how some Indian people behave like that to her, she is supporting her husband’s team and that doesn’t mean that she is disrespecting the Indian team. Grow up guys, yes we lost the cup but it’s not good to send hate DMs to her or the winning team.”
Earlier, Indian fans were criticised for deserting the Narendra Modi Stadium before the end of the Final.
The 130,000-seat stadium was largely empty shortly after the match leaving Pat Cummins and the Australians to lift the trophy in an eerie and awkward atmosphere.
Many of the Indian players had also left the field after shaking hands with the Australians so Cummins accepted the trophy from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles on his own.
Fans watching on from home quickly noticed the awkwardness, sharing their observations on social media.
“Shame on the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium for leaving as soon as India lost and not cheering for the Australian champions. Typical Gujarati attitude!!!” one wrote on X.
Another commented: “Sea of blue disappears as empty yellow seats take over Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.”
“Even before the end of the Final match, disheartened Indian fans have started leaving the Narendra Modi stadium,” added a third with a video.
“Having been at the stadium all I can say is that the atmosphere was as dull as India’s game. People leaving early in world cup final is truly pathetic though,” another said.
