Australia dominated the opening day of the fourth and final Test match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. At the helm of the domination was Usman Khawaja’s century that frustrated India through the day as Australia reached 255/4 at the end of day’s play. Khawaja, who has looked the best of the Australian batters in the Test series so far became the first Australian to hit a century in this series, ahead of Steve Smith and world no. 1 – Marnus Labuschagne.

India vs Australia, 4th Test: Day 2 Live

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer lauded Khawaja’s efforts on Day 1 and said that the batter showed his class and played beautifully to take India out of attack.

“Usman Khawaja, since that first Test match, has been the standout batter in the series. He showed his class and played beautifully. He played the whole day for his hundred and you’ve got to give it to his patience and persistence,” Jaffer said in a discussion on ESPNcricinfo.

Khawaja had the support of several batters throughout the day, but his best partnership came alongside youngster Cameron Green who remained not out at 49 at the end of day’s play. Jaffer felt that the Indian bowlers failed to contain Khawaja due to a strategic mistake, that should not be repeated on Day 2.

“Khawaja plays really well in his legs and he is really strong there. I can understand Ashwin bowling round the stump because you get LBW and bowled in play, but for the fast bowlers, you know, they need to use the over-the-wicket angle as well. Khawaja does get out quite a few times nicking the ball on the off to fast bowlers. So, you know, bowling in that manner the whole day, they could have done better,” Jaffer explained in the same discussion.

Australia will begin their second at 255/4 and look to pile on runs in what looked to be a great pitch to bat on.
