‘I’m wiping him out and taking a red’ and Gabby Agbonlahor insists Richarlison should have been booked for showboating like Neymar

Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison might have had a worse experience on Sunday had he been facing ex-Aston Villa star Gabby Agbonlahor

Spurs’ summer signing sparked debate after showboating in his side’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premeir League.

The game at The City Ground had five minutes left as the Brazilian coolly began to show off his tricks, clearly comfortable that his side would take all three points.

However, Forest weren’t too pleased, and the Brazilian was then heavily tackled by Brennan Johnson in what was deemed as an attempt to remind Richarlison that he needed to respect his opponents.

Referee Craig Pawson then gave Johnson a yellow card for going in on the star, which had left Richarlison clutching his ankle on the floor.

Both fans and pundits alike have had split opinions on the incident, with some stating it wasn’t a big deal to showboat in the closing stages of a game.

But when Agbonlahor was asked by Breakfast co-host Ally McCoist if he was for or against the forward’s antics, the former Aston Villa striker joked that he would’ve reacted in a pretty similar way to the Tricky Trees’ youngster.

“Nah, I’m taking a red card!” he laughed on Monday’s show.

“I’m running back from striker and I’m wiping him out Ally, I’m wiping him out and saying do those kick-ups in the treatment room!”

Richarlison came on in the 74th minute for Heung-min Son, and it didn’t take long for him to offer a delicious ball across the face of goal to an awaiting Harry Kane to net Spurs’ second.

But Agbonlahor wasn’t convinced the former Everton man had the right to showboat as the game came to a close.

“Because it’s not as if he’s played the whole game and he’s the top goalscorer in the Premier League, you’ve come on as sub.

“Yes a great assist, but come on, don’t disrespect your teammates.”

Other footballing stars have previously been booked for demonstrating their skills during a game, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar being given a yellow card for performing a rainbow flick in a 5-0 win in France.

And Agbonlahor joked that if an icon like Neymar can get booked for showing off, Richarlison shouldn’t get away with it either.

“Neymar used to get booted for it at PSG [Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona when he used to do it,” he said.

“As a footballer, you’re taking the mick!”
