Jeremy Vine: Owen Jones clashes with Lowri Turner
Mumford & Sons’ lead guitarist Winston Marshal has quit the band following backlash to a tweet supporting right-wing author Andy Ngo. Jeremy Vine discussed the departure on his Channel 5 show as Lowri Turner shut down Owen Jones for interrupting her and admitted she was “sick” of cancel culture.
Owen argued the guitarist hadn’t been cancelled and his decision was influenced by fans disagreeing with his political views.
He began: “Here we go people on the left being called snowflakes and then people get criticised on social media and they’re being driven out of bands.
“He chose to quit the band, this book was written by someone who was associated with some pretty extreme elements on the right in the United States.
“Every single day I’ve got people screaming at me X, Y and Z, imagine if I then suddenly declared I’m leaving The Guardian because of being cancelled.”

“The Sunday Times did a piece on [being cancelled] and they included Kevin Spacey who was forced into ending his career because of serious allegations,” he continued.
“It also included Scarlett Johansson who got criticised on social media for playing a character in a film, she continues to be a multi-millionaire.”
“Can I come back?” Lowri questioned. “Hang on a second, stop shouting down other people, listen for a minute.”
“Have I cancelled you?” Owen quipped and she hit back: “You’re in danger of it.”

“At the moment your job is not at risk because you work for The Guardian if you supported a right-wing something and you were monstered by the left your job might be at risk,” she argued.
“His job has gone because he stepped out…,” Lowri said while Owen attempted to interrupt.
“Hang on let me finish,” she hit back before continuing. “Because he stopped out of line and it was the commercial pressure on the band, it was affecting sales of the band.”
“Mumford & Sons probably have a bit of a leftie audience,” Jeremy pointed out.

“Hang on people are always trying to get me fired from The Guardian,” Owen remarked.
“What you’re saying here is customers are using their free choice about whether they buy a band’s record or not forced him to quit.”
“Are you saying people should be forced to buy Mumford & Sons CDs?”
“I don’t think mob rule should disallow people from having free speech,” Lowri remarked. “I’m not on Twitter because I self-censor…”

Owen tried to interrupt but she hit back: “Listen to other people for a minute.”
“You’re getting very passionate,” Owen quipped and she exclaimed: “Because I get tired of being shouted down by the left for which you are a token member of today.”
“He’s not a token member, no one’s a token,” Jeremy said.
“I find it so frustrating that those on the left are so intolerant of views on the right. You are not the consensus, Twitter is not the consensus,” Lowri argued.
Jeremy Vine airs on Channel 5 on weekdays at 9.15am.
