Twitter users reacted with anger on Saturday night as Matt Hancock secured a place in the final of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The former cabinet minister survived the public vote at the expense of former England rugby player Mike Tindall.

But while many took to Twitter to vent their frustration and anger that the MP had made it so far in the reality TV contest, others appeared to be amused and even hinted that they were voting for him deliberately to watch people have a ‘meltdown’ on the social media platform. Meanwhile, others seemed keen to point out that the mood on Twitter does not necessarily reflect that of the wider British public.

Some users expressed their shock at the politician making it into the show’s final. Posting a picture of the ITV show’s co-host Declan Donnelly with a surprised, open-mouthed expression on his face, ChelssPenk wrote: “Me when they announced Mike was leaving instead of Matt”

Earlier in Saturday evening’s episode, the celebrities took part in the much-loved Cyclone challenge, which saw them fight their way up a slippery, obstacle-ridden slope while trying to win stars for camp for one last time. Hancock appeared delighted by the prospect of taking part, telling his campmates: “I never thought I’d make it to the Cyclone. It’s going to be absolutely brilliant, I can’t wait.”

Back on Twitter, others took a more serious tone and referenced the ex-health secretary’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Lucasinlothian commented: “Can’t believe Matt Hancock got to do celebrity cyclone, you all realise he’s responsible, in large quantities, for the deaths of 150,000+ people during the pandemic, he also gave government contracts to his mates, broke his own rules, and voted against free school meals.”

Meanwhile, others revealed that the reason they were voting for Hancock was to watch people get angry on Twitter. PaintedViper wrote: “If #matthancock wins #ImACeleb I cannot wait to see the drama on #twitter”. And Notoriousbps88 commented: “Hahaha Matt Hancock into the final, it’s gas, twitter going into a meltdown.”

Donmagik1 added: “It amazes me how ppl think that twitter and twitter outrage is a reflection of real life and real British opinion. One-day ppl will understand that twitter will never b an accurate gauge 4 general public opinion! Once u understand that u will understand y matt Hancock is still in”

On Saturday’s edition of the show Tindall had shared his thoughts on Hancock’s position in the competition, saying: “Matt clearly wants to win.” Speaking in the Bush Telegraph Tindall said: “Matt’s making sure his T-shirt and his phone numbers are on display at all times. Matt clearly wants to win.

“I’m taking great pleasure in turning it around every time he leaves camp. Once a politician, always a politician. Always polling for votes.”

During the show hosts Anthony McPartlin and Donnelly mocked Hancock’s attempts to win as many public votes as possible, with Dec saying: “Matt Hancock showed off his new morning routine: shower, shave and show everyone the number on the back of your gilet.”
