I’ll never be a Celtic cheerleader, explains Andy Walker, despite what my social media critics say

ANDY WALKER insists he’ll never become a “cheerleader” for his former clubs amid flak he’s taken from Celtic fans on social media.

Former Celtic star Walker acknowledges that Hoops fans have a ‘divided opinion’ on him – after criticism of Celtic during their failed ten-in-a-row bid saw him lambasted by Neil Lennon.

Indeed, the ex-striker has been banned by both Celtic AND Rangers during his time at Sky Sports – which some would say proves that he is doing something right.

And he isn’t prepared just to toe the party line simply to curry favour – even if he insists that he IS greeted warmly by Hoops fans whenever he meets them in person.

Walker told The Celtic Way: “I am aware that there is a divided opinion of myself on social media.

“In my job now there are two teams on the pitch and I don’t care what strip you are wearing.

“I am going to give teams credit when they play well and criticism if they don’t.

“I am not interested in being a cheerleader. That is the job I do now and I really enjoy it and I am fairly relaxed about that.

“I have to say that anytime I meet a Celtic supporter I am greeted warmly which is great.”

Walker – who also starred for the likes of Motherwell, Bolton Wanderers and Ayr United – was a key player for the Hoops as they did the double under Billy McNeill during the club’s centenary season – and he loves meeting up with his pals from that era.

Walker said: “I find it a privilege to have played alongside the players that I did for Celtic.

“Some of them are my favourite players and I played alongside them and whenever I see them we always have a great chat.

“We are a band of brothers and we are bonded by the wonderful experience of the centenary season.

“I love meeting up and seeing all the members of the 1988 Celtic centenary team.”
