Ilhan Omar arrested during civil disobedience abortion action outside Supreme Court

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was arrested among at least 17 members of Congress and dozens of abortion-rights supporters protesting outside the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., according to her office and national media reports.

The event was intended as an action in peaceful civil disobedience, and Omar’s office announced shortly ahead of the event that “these types of protests have led to arrests of lawmakers in the past.”

Omar was processed and fined $50, a spokesman said. Other lawmakers, including Democratic Reps. Cori Bush (Mo.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), were ticketed for refusing to leave the street and released at the scene, the Washington Post reported, citing Capitol Police spokesman Tim Barber.

The Republican Party of Minnesota issued a statement criticizing Omar for “reckless and lawless behavior.”

Omar is running for re-election. She faces a primary challenge from former Minneapolis City Councilmember Don Samuels. The winner will likely face GOP-endorsed candidate Cicely Davis.
