Ibrahima Konate equals Harry Kane and Neymar Champions League record after Liverpool goal

Konate #Konate

Ibrahima Konate’s goal against Benfica drew him level with Harry Kane and Neymar with two goals in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League over the past five years.

Konate headed Liverpool ahead just after 20 minutes before Matias Ramos pulled Benfica level 12 minutes later. It was his second goal this season, the other coming in the first leg of the tie. Like his goal on Wednesday night, Konate had given his side the lead last week before they went on to secure a 3-1 win away from home.

His two goals have saw him match the same output as Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar. The latter two have struggled to beat the goalkeeper in key games of Europe’s premier cup competition for various reasons, from injuries to not qualifying for the tournament when it comes to the England captain.

Neymar has failed to find the net in the knockout stages since grabbing a goal in both legs of the Round of 16 against Borussia Dortmund during the 2019/20 campaign. For Kane, the England striker grabbed a goal against Juventus in the first leg of Round of 16 tie back in 2018, with the Italian side knocking Spurs out with a win in the second-leg.

He added another the following season at the same stage, this time against Dortmund, before his side lost out to Liverpool in the final. The Lilywhites qualified for the knockout stages 12 months later but Kane was unable to find the back of the net and the club have not been in the competition since.

Konate was a £36million summer signing from RB Leipzig, with the French centre -back proving to be a valuable player over the course of the season and coming up with important goals over the past seven days in Europe.
