A tourist has revealed why she got the word ‘mayonnaise’ tattooed on her arm after she got mocked in a viral clip.

Caitlin Delphine, originally from Sweden, shared a TikTok explaining she and a friend decided to get matching tattoos in Arabic with two Australian expats they met in a hostel in Morocco.

In the clip, which’s been viewed almost 2 million times, she hovers over her friend’s arm with a phone using Google translate that reveals the true meaning of the tattoo — mayonnaise.

Her friend then looks at the camera laughing with a facial expression implying it was perhaps a mistake.

Viewers were left baffled, with some questioning whether it was meant to say something else.

“What was it supposed to say?” one confused person asked.

While using Google Translate, she revealed that tattoo means mayonnaise in English. TikTok/caitdelphine

“That says mayonnaise in English but written in Arabic,” one person responded, while another added: “You would pronounce it ‘mayuniz’ so anyone who can read Arabic will know even if they don’t speak it lol.”

Following the confusion with the artwork, Caitlin was forced to record a follow-up video explaining the background story.

“I posted this TikTok as a joke and I have less than 100 followers and I didn’t think anyone was going to see it. But now people are repositing it and it’s kinda getting out of hand,” she laughed.

“First of all yes these tattoos are on purpose.

“The tattoo artist was great and he thought the whole thing was super funny and we made sure to go to a local Moroccan artist.”

She then explained that she and Jasmine had met two Australian guys in Spain and “we decided to follow them out to Morocco.”

“We had a fantastic time. It was a two-and-a-half-week trip so we decided to get tattooed to commemorate the whole thing.

“We were at lunch one day and talking about how beautiful the Arabic language is especially written out.

“We picked up a mayonnaise package and we were like ‘even mayonnaise looks really beautiful’ written in Arabic, so it became an inside joke.”

She said the group then decided to get the word as a tattoo.

She also said she didn’t realize there was no direct translation as it is spelled phonetically.

“But I think it makes it funnier and all of the locals were dying laughing and were taking pictures of Jasmines’s arm.

“[So] just know it’s really not that serious,” she added after some people mocked her for the artwork.

Her friend Jasmine also chimed into the comments section, saying: “Hahahah yes!! I love this! We just like to make memories.”

“I think the mayo tattoos look so nice bc it’s true it does look pretty written out,” one viewer wrote.

Meanwhile, Google even commented on the original clip, saying: True friendship is mayonnaise.”
