BBC viewers have called for Huw Edwards to get the break he truly deserves after leading coverage of the Queen’s death and funeral today.

Edwards had read out a statement confirming Queen Elizabeth II’s death during a live broadcast on Thursday, September 8, shortly after 6.30pm.

He received praise at the time for ‘holding it together,’ having already changed into a black suit and tie earlier in the day in a mark of respect.

Since then, Edwards has been at the forefront of BBC coverage, and today led coverage of the funeral.

Fellow presenter Kirsty Young, Fergal Keane, David Dimbleby, and Sophie Raworth were also on the bill to cover the historic event alongside him.

The monumental event is expected to become the most watched global broadcast in history with an approximate 4.1billion people tuning in.

After his coverage today and over the last two weeks, social media users having jokingly taken to social media expressing their hope that the 61-year-old will finally get the holiday he deserves.

Another penned: ‘Can someone give #huwedwards a pillow and blanket, followed by a long holiday, Please?’

‘After all this, Huw Edwards deserves a very long holiday wherever in the world he wants. Just maybe not to Center Parcs,’ another joked, referring to the controversy surrounding the resort company.

‘You’ve kept the U.K. going over the last 10 days… yes it’s a team effort but my goodness me you are a legend… Thank you for your energy and insight…,’ one person wrote.

Many others labelled him a ‘national treasure,’ with some even calling for him to receive a knighthood.

‘Can @thehuwedwards please get a knighthood and a holiday as soon as possible. Please and thank you,’ someone wrote.

Edwards had announced the death of the Queen live on BBC, after concern around her health earlier that day.

After an image of the flag at Buckingham Palace was shown at half mast, Edwards told viewers on September 8: ‘A few moments ago Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.’

Edwards then read out the statement from the Palace which said: ‘The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.’

Viewers flocked to social media to praise Edwards during the report, with one writing: ‘Huw Edwards holding it together. You can see him welling up and holding it back. #bbc @bbcnews I don’t envy him at this moment.’

Another penned: ‘Also, respect to Huw Edwards. He’s just done about a 72 hour straight live shift for the change of PMs. And anchored the 10 O’clock all week. He must be utterly exhausted. Dimbleby-esque stamina & professionalism.’
