Hutch’s winter farmer’s market bring back community during the cold weather

Winter does not mean there cannot be a farmers market.

Sheila Corn, the president of the Reno County Farmers Market, is heading up this biweekly event again this year. The market takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on the first and third Saturday of each month, including Feb. 20. The market will run through May 1.

“It’s the way to support the local economy,” said Corn, who owns Corn Family Farm. “People also have the ability to know where their food comes from.”

Because of the frigid weather, vegetables are scarce, but this week’s Saturday market will feature eggs, microgreens, baked goods, croissants, sourdough bread and soap.

In addition, two beekeepers will have lots of products available. Stephanie Brown of GG’s Honey Beez and More will bring her new dog treats. These bones come in three sizes and there are four flavors: cheesy bacon, peanut butter and jelly, allergy relief and mellow mutt.

All the bones have some honey product in them. The allergy relief has bee pollen mixed in it, while the mellow mutt contains some CBD oil. 

Brown also will bring new paw ointment. The ointment contains beeswax. 

“It can go on their elbows, toes and nose,” Brown said. “It’s for those rough dry patches that they get.”

As for human consumption, Brown’s newest product is Pineapple Express. This creamed honey contains pineapples mixed with honey and jalapeño. 

Brown has protected her beehives with extra insulation for the winter.

“They have plenty of food, and we put more insulation on,” Brown said. “We hope they’re going to make it.” 

The market will also include heat and serve entrées and lots of crafts. 

“It’s a different market (than the summer one),” Corn said. “It’s much smaller.”

Because the market takes place at the Wool Market and DIY School on Main Street in Hutchinson, only 14 venders can be showcased.

“It’s just a little touch of normal,” Corn said. “It just gives everything that individual touch.”

The market takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 420 N. Main St. in Hutchinson.
