Hungary vs France LIVE: Euro 2020 latest score, goals and updates from fixture today

Rabiot #Rabiot

Hungary put up a valiant performance against Portugal in their opening game and can consider themselves bitterly unlucky not to have secured a point, having kept the defending champions at bay for 84 minutes only for a wicked deflection to finally break the deadlock. Cristiano Ronaldo’s late double ultimately rendered the scoreline a commanding 3-0 defeat, but that by no means reflected the fight Hungary had showed.

Nevertheless, it means Hungary must secure at least a point to keep their faint hopes alive of reaching the knockout stages, and that will be a serious struggle against world champions France. Didier Deschamps’ side were electric in their opening victory over Germany, with Mats Hummels’ own goal – made possible by a brilliant Paul Pogba pass – ensuring Les Bleus of all three points. For Hungary, a front three of Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe and Antonio Griezmann may prove impossible to subdue as France aim to secure their place in the last 16. Follow all the action below:

Hungary vs France

  • Kick-off at 2pm BST
  • Hungary XI: Gulasci, Botka, Szalai, Fiola, Kleinheisler, Nagy, Nego, Orban, Sallai, Schafer, Szalai
  • France XI: Lloris, Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Digne, Pogba, Kante, Rabiot, Griezmann, Benzema, Mbappe
  • Euro 2020: Hungary 1-1 France 15:43 , Dylan Terry

81 mins: Kleinheisler, Nagy and Schafer have done a remarkable job on Kante today, all working to nullify his presence in the midfield. Not that the Frenchman hasn’t been able to cope, of course. But it’s been a real battle.

France win another corner. What can they do with this one? Griezmann delivers…straight into the arms of Gulacsi.

78 mins: Kante wins the ball back off substitute Cseri and gets things going for France once more. They can’t find a way through though and eventually Kante fouls Kleinheisler as Hungary relieve the pressure again.

The crowd are applauding everything to get right behind their side. The 60,000+ Hungarian fans have truly been the 12th man today.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-1 France 15:38 , Dylan Terry

76 mins: Hungary are still going for the win here! Sallai picks up the ball on the edge of the box after some neat play down the right, only for his shot to deflect off a French boot and fall into the hands of Lloris.

Sallai then holds the ball up absolutely brilliantly again and earns his side a throw-in.

Tamas Cseri has come on for Hungary in place of Schafer. Meanwhile, Pogba makes way for Tolisso and Giroud is on for Benzema. Double change by Deschamps, three made in total.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-1 France 15:35 , Dylan Terry

73 mins: Back to the match now and Dembele is making a real difference for the world champions. He eventually finds Griezmann who is fouled on the edge of the box. Michael Oliver plays the advantage and Kante shoots wide. The referee then decides the advantage has gone and gives a goal kick.

    Harsh on France, that.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-1 France 15:33 , Dylan Terry

Here is the equaliser. Griezmann draws France level.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-1 France 15:31 , Dylan Terry

70 mins: Can France go on and win this game now? The momentum is back with the world champions.

Griezmann sends a free-kick into Mbappe but he can only fire the ball wide as it drops over his shoulder.

And that’s the second half drinks break.

GOAL! Hungary 1-1 France (Griezmann) ⚽️ 15:28 , Dylan Terry

    67 mins: There it is.

Route one stuff! Hugo Lloris pumps a ball long down the field and it’s suddenly two versus two. Mbappe nips down the channel and fires the ball across. Attila Szalai gets a foot to the ball but he can’t clear it and Griezmann is there to sweep home from 12 yards.

France finally find a way through.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:25 , Dylan Terry

64 mins: I can’t stress enough how loud the Hungary fans are all around the Puskas Arena in Budapest. It’s sensational and the players are responding to it.

Griezmann and Mbappe exchange passes but then the Barcelona man plays a woeful cross out of play and Hungary can relax once more.

The crowd are starting to believe this may just be possible.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:23 , Dylan Terry

61 mins: Hungary refuse to sit back! Kleinheisler breaks from midfield and sends a low cross into the box which Varane has to deal with before Sallai gets a toe to it.

As soon as I said France look set to score, Hungary have answered back with some attacking play of their own. This is pulsating stuff.

59 mins: Here we go then. Rabiot is making way for Ousmane Dembele as Didier Deschamps looks to shake things up to get a reaction from his players.

Meanwhile, Kleinheisler continues to put out fires all over the pitch and send Hungary away on the front foot. Sallai eventually let’s fly from the edge of the box but he shanks it wildly all the way out for a throw-in.

France quickly move the ball to the other end of the pitch and find Dembele for the first time. He comes inside and then jinks back onto his right foot before rifling an effort past Gulacsi and onto the post!

    Close.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:18 , Dylan Terry

56 mins: Fiola clips a ball forward towards substitute Nikolic but he pushes Kimpembe in the back during his pursuit of the ball. You do feel Hungary are trying to wind up the PSG centre-back, they’re prodding him at every possible opportunity.

Oh that’s very poor from Rabiot. His pass backwards rolls out of play and Hungary can move up the pitch. But France recover possession quickly and come forward once more.

This is a bit like the seventh round of a boxing fight where one fighter is losing on points but is wearing down his opponent. He may be behind on paper, but eventually you feel he will get the win.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:14 , Dylan Terry

53 mins: Pogba with a speculative effort from 25 yards out. The Manchester United man is falling as he strikes his shot and it’s always heading wide of the post. He bangs the floor in frustration but they are getting on top of Hungary again.

Botka goes in the book for a late challenge on Mbappe. Cynical. Don’t blame him one bit, though. It’s the only way to get close to the 22-year-old superstar.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:12 , Dylan Terry

51 mins: Good save! Pogba finds a bit of room wide on the right of the penalty area. He takes a touch and then fires in a venomous strike which Gulacsi flies across his goal to parry away.

Good start to the second half from France as Griezmann sends in a corner which is flicked on by Pogba but Hungary get it clear.

You feel a goal is coming for the world champions but you cannot fault the energy of Kleinheisler and Schafer. They have been so dogged.

48 mins: Hungary immediately into a solid defensive block as Pogba let’s the ball roll out of play after some poor control. It’s important for France that they don’t become rattled.

You do feel this is going to be a very long half for Hungary if they are going to hold on for this famous win.

Digne flicks the ball onto Mbappe who in turn tries to find Benzema but there’s too much on it and Gulacsi can claim.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:07 , Dylan Terry

46 mins: Here we go then! A fascinating second half in store.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:06 , Dylan Terry

Second half almost upon us. Can the French turn this around?

Have just seen a replay of Fiola’s celebration and there is a brilliant moment when he jumps into a cordoned off area and bangs the table of a reporter before screaming in her face. She is amusingly stunned before then giving Fiola a belated celebration. Amazing.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 15:01 , Dylan Terry

Just look what it means. Simply extraordinary moment for the Hungary players and fans.

Here it is. A simply glorious moment.

    Half-time: Hungary 1-0 France 14:52 , Dylan Terry

That’s the break. Absolutely astonishing scenes at the end of the half as Fiola gives Hungary the lead over the world champions.

The goalscorer punches the air as Michael Oliver brings the half to an end and the crowd are going MAD!

Could we be witnessing an all-time great shock at the European Championships?

    Euro 2020: Hungary 1-0 France 14:50 , Dylan Terry

My oh my. The scenes at the Puskas Arena!

a group of people playing football on a field: (Getty Images) © Provided by The Independent (Getty Images) GOAL! Hungary 1-0 France (Fiola) ⚽️ 14:48 , Dylan Terry

    45+2 mins: OH MY WORD!

Where has that come from?! Fiola escapes down the left-hand side as all of a sudden the French are all at sea. He drives with pace into the penalty area and coolly slots the ball into the bottom corner beyond Hugo Lloris!

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:45 , Dylan Terry

44 mins: Benzema scurries in behind and looks to cut the ball back but his delivery bounces back off him and out for a goal kick. Been a frustrating 45 minutes for the France number 19.

Kleinheisler brings the ball away for Hungary and drives into the France half – the first attack they’ve had since the opening few minutes. He plays it left to Fiola and he cuts inside before unleashing a shot which hits his teammate Sallai and bounces away. Unlucky.

a group of people playing football on a field: (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) © Provided by The Independent (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:42 , Dylan Terry

41 mins: France are pressing and probing for an opener. You still feel they have many more gears they can go through if they want to.

Another bitey foul from Hungary, this time it’s Fiola on Pogba. France on the receiving end of a lot of aggressive challenges so far.

Kleinheisler relieves the pressure again for Hungary as he earns his side a throw-in. But what happens? France win it back instantly. This pressure is going to tell sooner or later.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:39 , Dylan Terry

38 mins: Another decent half-chance for France as they work it into the penalty area once more. Pogba has a tight angle but takes on the shot instead of squaring for Benzema in the middle and can only find the side-netting. He then apologies to Benzema who wanted the ball fed into him.

Within seconds it’s back with France. Relentless from the world champions.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:37 , Dylan Terry

36 mins: Mbappe really is turning on the style now. Nothing looks on for the Paris Saint-Germain forward but a quick schimmy and he’s past two defenders. Into the penalty area and he opts to shoot across goal, only to drag it wide.

It’s been pretty much non-stop France pressure for the last five minutes or so before Griezmann eventually puts a misplaced foot in and Hungary earn themselves a free-kick.

It’s quickly back with France and they break with a 3-on-3. Mbappe plays it into Benzema in the centre but then can’t find Griezmann in acres of space on the right. Another poor moment from Benzema.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:34 , Dylan Terry

33 mins: Biggest chance of the game! Wonderful move from France as all three forward players are involved.

Griezmann lifts a ball superbly over the top for Mbappe to run in behind. He flicks the ball delicately around the corner for Benzema to run onto. The Real Madrid man looks set to bulge the back of the net but his effort is ugly as he gets it horribly wrong, skewing it wide off his ankle.

Hungary get a major let off there.

a group of men playing a game of football: (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) © Provided by The Independent (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:31 , Dylan Terry

30 mins: Sallai brings the ball out well for Hungary but Kimpembe is equal to it and bundles him off the ball. The French centre-back then wins a free-kick for his side.

France have had 62 per cent possession so far and have created a couple of decent chances through Mbappe. Nothing to show for it so far, though.

Some lovely play from Hungary as Nikolic, Nagy and Sallai all link up before a ball over the top sees Lloris rush out to claim at the feet of the onrushing Schafer.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:29 , Dylan Terry

27 mins: Free-kick for France as we return from the drinks break and it’s Kylian Mbappe who steps up and blasts the ball into the face of substitute Nikolic who takes it like a trooper in the Hungary wall.

He then goes down and we have another stoppage in play, not that Hungary will be complaining about that too much.

Mbappe has a rye smile on his face after putting Nikolic on the deck.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:27 , Dylan Terry

24 mins: A sign of the pressure getting to Hungary a bit as Botka thumps the ball from his own half all the way out for a France goal kick and allows the world champions to come again.

Mbappe flicks the ball around the corner for Pogba who is then fouled by Schafer with a very late challenge.

We have our first drinks break now but Szalai is receiving treatment. He appeared to go down off the ball. Not sure what’s happened there but he is coming off. Very strange. A huge miss for Hungary as their captain departs for Nemanja Nikolic.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:22 , Dylan Terry

21 mins: France starting to get the upper hand now as we approach the drinks break (which is scheduled for midway through the first half).

Hungary eventually win the ball back and Sallai does well to draw another foul from Kimpembe. But France quickly have it back through the dynamic duo of Kante and Pogba harassing the Hungarian defence.

Varane eventually goes long and Digne nods down for Benzema. The French striker clips it into Mbappe but his header is well over the top.

a group of football players on a field: (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) © Provided by The Independent (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:19 , Dylan Terry

18 mins: I’m enjoying this game so far. It’s got a nice to and from between both teams.

Hungary come forward now and it’s Sallai who picks up the ball in a similar pocket of space to Mbappe at the other end. He decides to take the shot on but it’s very tame and Lloris safely picks it up off the floor.

France break and it’s another good chance for Les Bleus! Digne whips in a delightful cross from the left hand side and Mbappe meets it with a powerful header, only to skew it just wide of the far post.

Great move from the world champions.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:16 , Dylan Terry

15 mins: Oh huge chance! Mbappe finds a lovely pocket of space in between the lines. He picks up the ball 25 yards from goal and lays it off to Benzema. The Real Madrid man takes a touch to steady himself and then fires in a low effort towards the bottom corner. Gulacsi makes a strong save but it falls to Griezmann who has the easy task of passing it into the net but he finds the midriff of Gulacsi!

He was offside anyway but the Barcelona man didn’t know that.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:14 , Dylan Terry

12 mins: Early yellow card here! Benjamin Pavard goes into the book after he falls into Sallai on the far touchline, deep into the France half.

The free-kick is whipped in with pace but cleared away for a corner. And Lloris claims the corner at the back post despite receiving a bump from Botka on his way to collecting it.

A physical start from both teams, the type of game you imagine Hungary will enjoy. Orban looks to have won the ball back high up the pitch but referee Michael Oliver pulls him up for a foul.

12 minutes played and it’s goalless. Hungary have had the better of it too.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:10 , Dylan Terry

9 mins: Some big challenge flying in at the start of this one as Attila Szalai leaves a meaty one on Griezmann.

Nagy wins it back for Hungary and they break with the energy of the crowd behind them. He finds Fiola out wide but Griezmann is back there brilliantly to cut him out.

France win a corner but Griezmann’s delivery is cleared away by Szalai and Sallai then draws a free-kick for Hungary as Pavard backs into him.

Pulsating start without any real goalmouth action.

a group of football players on a field: (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) © Provided by The Independent (POOL/AFP via Getty Images) Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:07 , Dylan Terry

6 mins: Sallai escapes down the left and is taken out by Varane – really poor challenge from the Real Madrid man.

It’s whipped in from Sallai and Pogba comfortably heads away from inside the penalty area. Botka went down in the box after a coming together with Kimpembe but there didn’t seem to be anything in that.

Can’t even see where the contact was made on the replay. Bizarre.

    Euro 2020: Hungary 0-0 France 14:04 , Dylan Terry

3 mins: Hungary in red and white with the green socks kicking from left to right. France in white and blue.

The crowd immediately roaring behind Hungary. Kante in strongly to quash an early attempt to break down the left. Plenty more of them to come from the Chelsea man.

France then quickly into their attacking shape as they look to probe Hungary but Nego wins the ball pack well from Digne and is then fouled.

    Decent start from Hungary.

    Kick-off: Hungary 0-0 France 14:01 , Dylan Terry

1 min: Here we go then! Hungary get us underway on a Saturday filled with fascinating football.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:59 , Dylan Terry

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a national anthem shift as big as that. We go from the beaming, bouncy French tune to the slower, Adele-like Hungarian anthem. Both glorious in very, very different ways.

Anyway, all that is trivial. The game is upon us!

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:57 , Dylan Terry

A very loud French contingent present for the game today and they get stuck into the national anthem. This is what the Euros is all about.

The players are walking out onto the pitch now. Not long until we are underway at the Puskas Arena. A roaring 67,000 fans welcome both teams onto the field.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:53 , Dylan Terry

Hungary have not won any of their last four games at the European Championships. A draw with Iceland, a defeat to Belgium and two games against Portugal which they drew and lost.

Their last win in the competition came back in their opening match of Euro 2016 when they beat Austria 2-0.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:50 , Dylan Terry

    TEN MINUTE WARNING.

The world champions are nearly upon us once more. The stars of the French national team will grace the field for the second time at these European Championships in just ten minutes time.

Safe to say those there supporting France today are having a lovely old time.

To add to that, temperatures are expected to rise to 33C at stages of the match and for that reason there will be water breaks for the players.

    Sensible.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:40 , Dylan Terry

It’s currently 28 degrees in Budapest and the sun is shining over the pitch ahead of the match between Hungary and France.

It will undoubtedly be a case of picking when to exert pressure in the game because this weather will not allow either side to play full throttle football for 90 minutes.

The last time these two sides met was 16 years ago in a friendly. France won 2-1 thanks to goals from Djibril Cisse and Florent Malouda.

France have won each of the last five meetings between the teams.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:25 , Dylan Terry

The main man looks ready to go. There is always excitement around any game Kylian Mbappe is involved in. At a major tournament, that anticipation is even greater.

The only change the world champions have made to their starting XI from the win over Germany is bringing in Everton’s Lucas Digne for Lucas Hernandez at left-back.

Hungary have also made one change with Loic Nego coming into the midfield to replace Gergő Lovrencsics.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:15 , Dylan Terry

So, what are your guys’ predictions for today’s first game then? France to coast through to the last 16? Or Hungary to produce the biggest shock of the tournament so far?

    Tweet me your thoughts @dylanterryjnst.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:05 , Dylan Terry

It’s worth pointing out that Germany did dominate possession for the majority of the second half against France earlier this week. They also could have snatched a draw if that Serge Gnabry effort had dropped just a little lower. So there is some hope for Hungary.

The caveat to that, of course, is that many felt France were playing in second gear, largely keeping Germany at arms length and hitting them superbly on the break through Mbappe.

You do feel Hungary will have to absorb the pressure today and try to make the most of set-pieces and counter-attacks. They simply cannot afford to be caught high up the pitch because France are devastating when their opponents are out of position.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 13:00 , Dylan Terry

There will be more than 60,000 fans in the Puskas Arena today, the majority of which will be cheering on the home side Hungary.

But as the pictures come through from the stadium, there is clearly a lot of support for the world champions too.

Is this how you have to warm-up in order to win a major tournament? Is this what was missing from England’s preparation yesterday?

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 12:50 , Dylan Terry

France have not lost a match in normal time at a major tournament since the 2014 World Cup when they were beaten 1-0 in the quarter-finals by Germany.

They have also not lost to Hungary in a competitive game since 1971.

Safe to say recent history is with France when you look at this one on paper.

Here is the fixture list for Saturday’s festival of action at Euro 2020. I for one am very excited.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 12:33 , Dylan Terry

This is the Puskas Arena in Budapest where today’s match is being played.

Hungary will be buoyed by 61,000 fans inside the stadium, another capacity crowd to add to the raucous atmosphere they created against Portugal.

Jokes aside, today’s match should be a good one. France will want to lay another marker down to build on their impressive win over Germany. And Hungary will not want to leave it until the last game to try and pick the all important win which could take them through to the second round.

Whether they have the quality to keep Didier Deschamps side off for 90 minutes is a whole other discussion.

Euro 2020: Hungary vs France 12:20 , Dylan Terry

Coming off the back of a night watching England labour to a dismal goalless draw against Scotland in the pub, the sight of this man drinking beer pre-12am has only added to my bad mood.

At least he has water as well, I guess. I could learn from him.

How good was this man against Germany? His pace is simply frightening and the intelligence of his runs makes him a despicable nightmare for any defence.

Hungary have their hands full to the brim today.

So, are you England fans still mourning that insipid display last night? And have you Scotland fans left the pub yet? Either way, it doesn’t matter because more Euro 2020 football is right on your doorstep a little more than 12 hours later.

Hungary take on world champions France today as they bid to pull off a seismic upset against the tournament favourites.

France will progress through to the last 16 if they get the job done and will head into their final group match against Portugal with an air of freedom. They are coming off the back of a 1-0 win over Germany.

Meanwhile, Hungary face the incredible tough task of beating France or Germany to reach the second round after being ground down against Portugal in a 3-0 defeat.

FRANCE AIM TO SECURE PLACE IN LAST 16 11:35 , Dylan Terry

Welcome to The Independent’s live coverage as Hungary host France in Group F.

Hungary suffered a 3-0 defeat in their opening game against Portugal, however, that scoreline hardly reflected a valiant performance that kept the defending champions at bay for 84 minutes.

It will take something far greater to stop the juggernaut that is world champions France this afternoon, though. Les Bleus were typically brilliant in their opening 1-0 win against Germany and can secure their place in the last-16 with victory at the Puskas Arena.
