A senior Huawei executive’s hopes of escaping US extradition and returning to China were dashed by a judge in Vancouver yesterday.
In a momentous decision, British Columbia Supreme Court justice Heather Holmes ruled that Meng Wanzhou’s alleged fraud broke both Canadian and US law, paving the way for extradition.
The ruling, which Ms Meng will probably appeal against, comes 18 months after her arrest at Vancouver airport on a US warrant for bank fraud and Iran sanctions violations, and is expected to provoke a punitive response by China.
American officials accuse Ms Meng, the daughter of the Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, of lying in 2013 about the Chinese company’s control of a subsidiary operating in Iran, exposing banks to possible sanctions violations. She insists that
