Hozier had a strong message of support for the LGBTQ+ community during a Nashville performance yesterday — one that’s particularly timely for Americans.

The singer joined a slew of other musicians for “Love Rising,” an event intended to raise awareness (and money) to push back against anti-LGBTQ+ laws popping up in Tennessee.

“The Irish revolutionary James Connolly once said that no revolutionary movement is complete without its poetical expression,” he told the crowd during his set. “And I feel, just for me, there’s so many elements of queer culture that are, at times, no less than revolutionary.

“And in a time of political repression and suppression and fearmongering, artificially generated fearmongering and scapegoating, I feel that just telling the truth of who you are and being who you are and standing up for that, and expressing that, is a very revolutionary act.”

Hozier’s statement comes at a time when Tennessee is one of several states currently taking aim at drag performances, with the current proposed legislation worded broadly enough that trans people are likely to be targeted as well.

Of course, other artists at the event took similar stances in support of the LGBTQ+ community, and drag performers in particular, both by simply being there and in their words to the crowd.

Maren Morris brought drag queens onto the stage to perform alongside her.

And Hayley Williams brought friend and co-founder of Good Dye Young, Brian O’Connor, on stage with her in drag.

Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Yola, Brittany Howard, Adeem the Artist, Ruby Amanfu, Julien Baker, Joy Oladokun, Jake Wesley Rogers, Mya Byrne, and Allison Russell were among others who contributed their talents to the event.

And yes, Hozier made sure to perform a favorite among the LGBTQ+ community, his breakthrough hit, “Take Me to Church.”
