How the hell has Greta Gerwig not got a best director Oscar nomination?

Film fans were left outraged after Barbie’s Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed as the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced.
The 96th Academy Awards will be taking place on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre, with some of the biggest names in film up for the top trophies.
It was down to Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid to announce this year’s batch of nominees live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
However, things took a turn when filmmaker Greta outrageously led the list of snubs, after being left off of the list of best directors of the year, with Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Justine Triet, Yorgos Lanthimos and Jonathan Glazer among those given a nod.
This was possibly the most shocking upset of the day, considering Barbie – and Oppenheimer – had us all in a chokehold for much of 2023.
She also made history as the first solo female director to have a film pass the massive $1billion mark worldwide, surpassing the success of everyone else mentioned.

Justine, who was behind Anatomy of a Fall, is the sole female filmmaker on the list, with Celine Song also not earning a nod for Past Lives, which has been met with huge acclaim from critics.
Since the Oscars first began, only seven women have been nominated for the top directing honor – Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the trophy in 2010, for the Hurt Locker.
Chloé Zhao was handed the honor a decade later for Nomadland, while Jane Campion was also awarded for the Power of the Dog in 2021.
Greta wasn’t the only surprise snub from Barbie world, as Margot, who starred as ‘original Barbie’ and stole all our hearts in the process, didn’t get a look-in – while co-stars America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling did earn nominations.

Although Barbie landed eight nods, fans were left raging that Greta and Margot were not recognized for their work.
Flocking to Twitter, one fumed: ‘Greta Gerwig made a film that was critically acclaimed, culturally impactful, hilarious, unique, visually exceptional, perfectly cast and acted, left people laughing, crying and thinking AND made a billion dollars at the box office. But no Best Director nom?! #Barbie #Oscars2024.’
Another agreed: ‘Wait Ryan Gosling got nominated for his role as Ken, but Margot Robbie didn’t get nominated for Barbie?! And Greta got snubbed for Best Director?!?!

A follower said: ‘After an insane year of saving movies, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie have been snubbed by the Academy for Best Director and Actress. #Oscars #Oscars2024 #OscarNoms #Barbie.’
‘The Greta Gerwig snub in Best Director is pretty egregious, especially after you listen to the director commentary on ‘Barbie’ and see how much thought went into it #Oscars2024,’ a Twitter user fumed,

An unimpressed commenter shared: ‘Greta Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director. Absurd. Barbie is not only one of the best-reviewed films of the year but also the highest-grossing. Just completely absurd. #Oscars2024.’

As a fan quipped: ‘I guess Barbie must have directed itself, huh? #Oscars2024.’
Greta and Margot have yet to speak publicly about the snub, but all eyes will be on Ryan’s I’m Just Ken performance…
Elsewhere, Lily Gladstone landed her first Academy Award nomination for her dazzling turn as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon, beside Poor Things’ Emma Stone, who has led the charge during awards season so far.

Emma could take home her second best actress gong, having previously won for La La Land, but the pair face stiff competition from Maestro star Carey Mulligan, Nyad’s Annette Bening, and Sandra Huller for Anatomy Of A Fall.
Leonardo DiCaprio was shockingly snubbed for Killers of the Flower Moon, leaving Cillian Murphy as the frontrunner to take home the best actor gong for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
He will be battling it out against American Fiction’s Jeffrey Wright, Bradley Cooper for Maestro, The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti and Colman Domingo for Rustin.
America Ferrera was nominated for best supporting actress, thanks to that memorable monologue which earned applause in cinemas around the world.

She is set to face off against Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt, The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Danielle Brooks for the Color Purple and Nyad’s Jodie Foster.
Emily’s Oppenheimer co-star Robert Downey Jr has been the favorite to take home best supporting actor in March, while Robert De Niro was given a nod for Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Ryan will be hoping his Barbie performance was Kenough – and will be performing his hit I’m Just Ken during the ceremony – but will be going up against Poor Things’ Mark Ruffalo, and American Fiction’s Sterling K Brown.
